Microsoft Remote Display Control / WM5 and VGA
I remember when the PocketPC first came out, we were excited about its capabilities and tried to show off whenever we could. Having that little screen to show to a big crown was a enormous challenge..
Until Microsoft made available a free utility called Remote Display Control. The utility resides on the PC host as well as the PocketPC as client. When you activate the Host and Client, the screen of your PocketPC will display on your PC screen, you then can use the PC mouse to control the PPC and of course use the LCD projector to show on larger screen. The resolution then was strictly QVGA 240 x 320.
Well, since then.. The PocketPC resolution has improved on certain devices including VGA 480 x 640 and the VGA out cable is also available. There not much need for the old Remote Display Control Utility..
Yesterday, I read an article posted on JustAnotherMobileMonday’s Blog, Netsyd found out that old utility can be “VGA-aware” and like every VGA-aware program, you just need to put the MUI file in the install directory and voila, now the Remote Display is well VGA-aware …
The beautiful VGA screen of your WM mobile device now shows up on your PC monitor with all its glory.
For your convenience, I put together the zip file HERE!
To install:
- Unzip
- Copy the SetSecurity.exec to your WM device, if you have not done before, this is just to prevent the question about program is not registered with MS,..from popping up.
- From you PC/ActiveSync, launch RemoteDSP.exe to install the Host and Client (select install on device) programs
- The small client program (17K) will be installed directly in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs
- Copy the CErDisp.exe.0409.mui in to the same location- Please note 409 is English version, other language might require different 3 digit number
- Now launch both Host and Client programs, and follow the wizard to connect, PPP, etc..

Hey SolSie … thanks for posting this on Aximsite, and also, thanks for putting all the pieces together. I had completely forgetten about the SetSecurity.exe. I’m so used to having Tweaks2k2 set it for me that I pretty much forgot about it.

The new DSP, when running at 480×640 is slower than the original, I guess because it’s transferring 4 times as much data.
…isn’t there a VNC client available instead?

It looks as though you have Remote Display Control running on Vista? I’m trying to accomplish that, but getting an “ERR_MISSING_CEAPPMGR” error message on the install.
If you’ve got it running, how did you do it?

I have the same problem as Brian: Can’t figure out how to run that on Windows Vista. I only get a blank white screen on the app.

hi, this program is working fine for me, i have a htc P3600 and a laptop with windows vista.
i don’t have any problem, just intal the program in your computer and PDA, copy the language file to the same location on the PDA program file, and run it.

I tried the install on Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone in the hope that I could use this. It says that the program wasnt designed for this device, which is a downer. Have I dont something stupid? I am installing version 2.03 – is there a newer one around?

It doesn’t work on German Windows Mobile. I rename “0409.mui” to “0407.mui”, but no success… Do I need a special file for German Windwos Mobile?
It works! I generate a new cerdisp.exe.0407.MUI with the tool “Tweaks2K2 .NET for Pocket PC” (http://www.tweaks2k2.com/)
System Tricks -> VGA Brute Force -> select “\Windows\Startmenü\Programme\CErDisp.exe”
You only need the “Trial version” of Tweaks2k2, because you can start this version 3 times.
Of the users having problems with ‘ERR_MISSING_CEAPPMGR’ has anyone cured it? I was trying it on Vista and Mobile 6.
