Podcast/Vidcast Users Rejoice! PlayListMgr .3 Released..
In my several previous posts, I expressed how using Podcast has becomes my favorite hobby…
Unlike for Apple/iPod/iTunes, which offers a very easy way to select, subscribe and auto-download Podcast/Vidcast to the iPod using the iTunes Portal..Unfortunately, Microsoft completely misses this popular option even on the latest WMP11- Read HERE-
On Windows Mobile Devices, all the pieces are there, but there is no easy way to have a seamless solutions…
There are essentially 3 parts of the process: (there are solutions such Hubdog, FeederReader, IFeedYou that can collapse into 1 step and completely PC-free, if you have high speed WM device – For the average users, I think the approach describbed here is more straight forward, intuitive…)
Aggregate the Podcast: you can use several approaches, you can either aggregate the select Podcast feeds directly on your WM device – if you have very good bandwidth, e.g EV-DO, Edge – Personally, I aggregate on my PC using Juice, Juice creates a main Podcast directory and one subdirectory per feed
- Synchronize with your WM/Storage card: I am using Mobsync to synchronize the Podcast directory with my WM device storage card, a mirrored directory structure will be created and will be maintained bi-directionally
- Playback: The first 2 parts are just a one-time setup and you can forget about them…Unless you use Juice to add new feeds…If you implement these 2 steps correctly, you should expect to have freshest contents on your WM device every morning automatically. Now, the playback part:
As I posted HERE – Vicott’s Playlistmanager utility- This utility just got added a new Podcast Dialog, which allows with 2 clicks, before you start your day, either WMP or TCPMP will be launched and play the most recent feeds to the oldest ones. Playlistmrg creates the fist time a playlist (Podcast.asx) and at subsequent launches, it refreshes the Podcast playlist and sorts the contents in arrival order.
In the morning I just jump in my car for my daily commute, launch Playlistmrg, tap the Podcast button and tap play all button..And just relax enjoy all the latest contents…I opted for TCPMP (do not forget to perform File association .asx to TCPMP), since TCPMP can play practically all media formats and it also has bookmark capability as well as maintaining the playlist accross on/off, so during the day, when you know there is no update, you can just launch TCPMP again and it will resume the playback from where you left off.

Hey Solsie – finally got a chance to try all of this out. Like it. Juice is pretty slick, Plalist Manager is good – overall I agree with you, this seems like a good method. Thanks for the tips …
Patrick, have you tried the video part yet? Thx for the plug!
Hi Solsie,
Thanks for the heads up. I just tried your tip and have not found a way to handle mov (or mp4) files.
I am using WMP to create playlists; as you say MS wants us to do just that but the auto play list feature in WMP11 is a nice feature to grab new podcasts as they come (I also use juice to dl podcasts). I have found though that video playlists (such as mp4 and mov) which TCPMP handles well are not managed either by WMP11 (mov), nor PlayListMgr who just dont see them when adding a folder. Have you tried this and do you have any ideas?
Thanks
Salut Oscar, The latest Playlistmrg v0.3 handles .mov, mp4 as well as mp3
I think you confuse me with playlist (which is .asx) and its contents (.mp3,.mov,.mp4)
