- Review TomTom Navigator 5 Bundle

I always think the GPS is one of the most killer app on the mobile device. You heard all the new technologies offered from Google, MS, Yahoo, cellphone carriers that allow to have kinda traffic, directions, etc. information on your mobile device (phone). I still think the PDA is a better platform for the GPS than the phone IMHO while driving.
The GPS on my PPC is almost like a GPS dedicated device in my car. Mounted securely on my dashboard, the GPS function is on all the time and I can switch back to ContactPro to get a phone#. I prefer my phone is on the separate device (BT/HF) so I don’t have to switch too much between different apps while I am driving.
I am using GPS almost everyday..Unlike most people think, often say: they know their destination, they don’t need one..They certainly don’t understand the following:
- GPS can tell you your ETA (Estimate Time of Arrival) based on average of your speed (for last few minutes) and the remaining distance. So if you are going to the customer meeting, you will know when you get there and perhaps call them in advance your ETA..)- Less tress! being late..
- When you run out of gas, you need to get to the closest gas station, just ask the GPS to make a detour to the your closest gas station (of your preferred brand of your choice). BTW this is also applicable for Starbucks, ATM, Restaurants, etc.
- Being a busy professional in Southern California, I have several hops of customer visits during the day and constantly on the phone (BT/HF of course), the GPS can be used as reminder to get me back on right track, even when I miss the off ramp in downtown LA.
- And much more..
Thomas Chan just bought his bundle (GPS BT receiver and TomTom as Navigation software) and gave his first impression. While there is nothing special about the bundle, two things caught my eyes are the “Real Time Traffic & Weather Information” and the capability to switch to different speaking languages.

“Getting real time traffic, IMO, is a key function for routing software. TomTom Traffic does not provide official service in the US at the moment. But I heard from support that there is a free trial going on between now and end of the year in the US. ..
To use real time traffic, I had to plan a route first. Then I went to TomTom Traffic and Update Traffic Info to get the latest traffic info on that route. It allowed constant traffic info download and let me determine the time interval. ….I tried it on my commute route during rush hour. I usually don’t go on 101S as it is always congested during commute hours. I looked up TomTom Traffic, and it said all clear. I doubted the info but I took that route anyway. Indeed, other than couple minor slowdown, I was able to get to work without much delay…
..With the trial, I can also download real time weather info. Weather info is provided specifically for any destination you choose. “
One of another important component that the reviewer did not mention is the auto-mount. I went through several car mount systems until I decided to invest to the adjustable Proclip mount (see pictures and review HERE) and I have been very happy with it. Alternatively you can get this equally good but less expensive mount I posted HERE!
BTW, I am a big fan of iGuidance (read the v.3 HERE!) and never had the opportunity to play with TomTom, which is, I believe a very good alternative.
