Tip: Customize the “New…” Menu with iLauncher 3

When you migrate from WM2003 to WM5, you find the “New” button is gone and is replaced with the softkeys, which are programmed to Calendar and Contact by default on Today screen.

The new iLauncher 3 allows you to recreate that “New…” menu in the “New Menu” tab (in the add shortcut menu). However, this menu has below given items and it cannot be customized.

  • Excel Workbook
  • Message
  • Contact
  • Task
  • Appointment
  • Note
  • Word Document

If you are not satisfied with the default list then there’s only one thing you can do: Create your own custom New Menu!

(The screenshot on shows few items already taken off from the standard list).

Stefan Winkel wrote a tutorial showing how you can customize to your liking! The original thread is HERE

I streamline Stefan procedure and only focus on the “New” Menu at the bottom

Step 1 – Creating the New Menu. This step is just to tell you to create a tab call “New…” (or any name you like) and add the the shortcuts you choose. Unlike the normal Tab, specify this one as “Hide Tab”

  • Go into the iLauncher Options (Start -> Programs -> iLauncher Utilities -> iLauncher Options).
  • Go to the “Tabs” tab in the bottom.
  • Tab “Add…” and type “New…” (without quotes) in the ‘Tab name:’ box. Tap the “Hide Tab” box.
  • Select the “Shortcuts” tab in the bottom, and from the drop down menu select “New…” (the tab you just created).
    • Tap “Add…” and go to the “New Menu” tab in the bottom.
    • Choose an item that you want to appear in the “New…” menu and tap “Select”
    • Repeat the two steps above untill you are satisfied. You can also choose other items, I suggest checking out the “Special” tab that is located to the right of the “New Menu” tab.
  • Order your items by selecting the item you want to move and use “Move Up” or “Move Down”. (I’d suggest the most frequently used items should be at the bottom..close to New..button)
  • If you are happy with the items and the order they are in, proceed to Step 2

Step 2 – Assigning the New Menu. I admit, this step 2 is a little bit tricky. Just stick to the script below:

  • Are you still on the “Shortcuts” tab? Good!
  • At the moment, when you look at the drop down menu, you should have the “New…” tab selected. (So the box with the arrow should say “New…”). This is how you left the screen in step one.
  • Now tap that drop-down menu, and select the special tab you want the “New…” menu to appear on. For this purpose, just select the “left softkey”.
  • Now tap “Add…”, go to the “Special” tab (at bottom) and select “iLauncher Tab Menu”. When you tap “Select”, you will be prompted to specify a tab. Choose the “New…” tab and press “OK”.
  • Finally, back on the “Shortcuts” tab, tap “Additional” (the iLauncher Tab Menu will have to be selected), and change the “Display name” to something like “New…”. This is required when you assign the New… menu to a soft-key. Note that you will not see the display name updated in the shortcuts list, but don’t worry it will be updated!
  • Tap “OK” in the top right corner.
  • You might need to soft reset and you are done!
  • From now on, adding or deleting the items is just a breeze! Just go to option and customize your Tab “New..”. Please do not forget, you can put folder shortcuts, Control Panel applets, Playlist shortcuts, etc..

In my example below, I select:

  1. Appointment
  2. Contact
  3. Task
  4. Soft-Reset
  5. Power-Off
  6. Screen Capture

Note: In case, you don’t have iLauncher v3 ..yet. I posted another free utility HERE , called WM5NewMenu, which also can help you to create the “New” button.
