Apple Orders 12 Million iPhone to Manufacturer

Bloomberg reported that Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer won a contract to make 12 mil. handsets.

Rumors say Apple Marketing plan would be that the iPhone won’t be tied to any specific carrier. Instead, it will be sold “unlocked”, requiring you to insert a GSM subscriber identity (SIM) card. The downside: Apple won’t get any subsidies or special deals from working with the carriers. The upside: such an approach opens up most of the world as the target market instead of just the US. This approach would prove that Apple is thinking globally with its next product segment — and that phone market could bring literally hundreds of millions of new prospects to Apple. iPhone vs. the zPhone?

On another hand, Microsoft’s own audio and video player, the Zune, debuted earlier this week, and at some point this will be joined by another model with additional capabilities. The company’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, echoes something Microsoft has said before: a phone/Zune combination is in the works.

At this point, no additional information is available on either one of these devices. One of the most important questions still unanswered is whether these devices will be smartphones, or just “dumb” phones with multimedia capabilities added on.

Next year will be the year of MP3 hard drive player + Phone!
