Jenneth from GirlGoneMobile posted lots of pictures as well as her first take of the iPaq rx4540

The iPAQ rx4540 distinguishes itself from other portable media players by having Bluetooth 2 and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, as well as all of the productivity and Internet applications that form part of Windows Mobile 5 on-board. Its styling seems to target younger, more style-conscious users, yet its chief differentiator to devices like the iPod is its productivity-enhancing capabilities.

In my opinion, this sort of device would be attractive for someone looking for a stylish PDA that doesn’t have a phone built-in, rather than someone looking for a portable media player – especially at this price point of AU$499, which puts it on the same footing as the 80GB iPod. While the included 1GB iPAQ File Store is impressive for a Pocket PC, it doesn’t compare favourably to other portable media players in this price range.

What the rx4540 really seems to be missing is dedicated multimedia playback buttons, and reliance on using the stylus really detracts from its overall usability. Licensing the Core Media Player to enhance the rx4540’s video playback capabilities also wouldn’t hurt. Like the Zune, it has Wi-Fi, however HP hasn’t promoted the use of this feature in any multimedia sense.

That being said, audio quality is fantastic when using headphones, and the 2.8in screen is a good size for video playback. Assuming a 4GB card would work in the rx4540, this capacity is now affordable and would bring overall storage in this device to 5GB. If I didn’t use a converged PDA/phone device, this would be a great (and relatively affordable) companion to a mobile phone.
