Don’t get over excited yet!

Folks at CoreCodec.org just put up a teasing static template at BetaPlayer.com and mention it will not be ready (at least until Consumer Electronic Show – Jan 07).

You might wonder what BetaPlayer is. Below is a little history perspective put together by Slem

“BetaPlayer was the precursor to TCPMP.  TCPMP was born after picard revitalized the BetaPlayer project by porting it to Palm (and renaming the entire app The Core Pocket Media Player).  When TCPMP got so popular that it garnered attention not only of users, but also certain IP holders, a bifucation became necessary to maintain compliance with GPL requirements.  Thus CorePlayer was conceived under a different license to accomodate third-party IP, and BetaPlayer was revived to replace what was TCPMP.  (There were a few starts toward only licensing TCPMP with the third party IP to companies for integration, but ultimately CC determined it could also make a full version available directly in this way, benefitting users directly.)  This is CoreCodec’s way of acknowledging the legal requirements of licensing certain technology, but continuing to emphasize and embrace its open source roots.
So the short answer is that BetaPlayer will be the continuation of TCPMP under the GPL license, while CorePlayer will be the pay-version of the application, with additional format support and features.  There won’t be any more “TCPMP” releases (on the return to “BetaPlayer,” see here).  A lot of people are interested to see what BetaPlayer will look like, and how it will compare both to the prior versions of TCPMP, and its new big brother CorePlayer.  We know BP can’t have things like AAC or AVC, so it will be very interesting to see what parts of the development CC has done with CorePlayer get incorporated”..
