For Your Next Holiday Trip, Just Leave your Laptop Behind!
By Spmwinkel
I’m not really the power user that needs to have his life with him on a screen all day. In fact, if I wasn’t used to my PPC, I could do fine with a paper calendar and regular mobile phone. But there are a lot of people that do need to be mobile, and in December a lot of people travel even more.
If you are someone that takes his laptop everywhere, you might want to ask yourself if you really need that. You can do a lot with just your Windows Mobile device!
First of all, you can use Card Export from Softick to install PC software on your storage card. It emulates a USB Mass Storage device. So when you get to your destination, all you need is a PC! Switch USB mode from Active Sync to Card Export, insert your Pocket PC into cradle or connect to USB cable, and after few seconds desktop drivers automatically mount cards as a logical disk. You can use the software from your personal PC everywhere!
For software to use with this, take a look at PortableApps. You can get the whole suite, or click Applications in the top bar to see a list of the portable applications they mention. For example: Sudoku, GIMP (Photo / Image editor), Firefox (Internet Browser), Audacity (Audio recorder and editor), OpenOffice (word processor, spreadsheet, presentations with Microsoft compatibility). Thunderbird (email client), Sunbird Portable (Calendar / Task manager)
Second, if you’re on the road, you really don’t need a laptop or MP3 player to listen to your favorite music station. You can read here how you can easily create shortcuts to your favorite radio or TV station using iLauncher. Without iLauncher, you can of course still access the stream from your preferred radio channel’s website, if it has one.
If you’re worried about missing VoiceMail messages, check out our earlier post here and follow the link to find out how you can use GotVoice. Free!
You can use Map24 mobile to have your personal map. Do route planning and POI (Point of Interest) searching from your Pocket PC, and personalize it with your settings and favorites from your MyMap24 account. It’s free, all you need is a data connection! Go to http://www.map24.com/, click “Products”, and then “Map 24 Mobile” to read more and download.
And if you think you’d miss the laptop experience, check out this post to recreate the Windows XP experience!
