MapKing 2007, GPS Mapping Software for Asia
MapKing is a GPS software similar to those by Garmin and TomTom. The difference is that it has maps for various countries in Asia, where these other GPS mapping companies either do not have a map for or has really bad and outdated maps. I lifted the description below off the MapKing website.
“MapKingâ„¢ is the first pan-region multilingual mobile mapping system in Asia managed by MapAsia.com Limited with input from leading Asian partners. It is a great tool for trip planning and to explore the huge potential market in Greater China and Asian countries (Maps sold separately for different OS and language). MapKingâ„¢ is the first digital map provides English road name and place name in China and Asian cities. MapKingâ„¢ has firmly established market leader status as the bridge between western travelers and the rapid growing cities in East. More after the jump…
MapKingâ„¢ offers maps in English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. Current maps are available for the following cities and regions, Please check the OS and Language before you purchased
Greater China :Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, China 2300 cities Points, Pearl River Delta Road Network, Shenzhen, Dongguan Macau Hong Kong Hiking Trial, Taipei, TaiChung, Tainan, Hsinchu, KaoHsiung
Asia cities countries :Bangkok, Manila, Singapore with Johor, Jakarta, New Delhi, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Ho_Chi_Minh City Tourist map, Seoul Tourist Map, Asia map”
I have been using version 7 (there is a version 2007 out now) for a year now and find it superbly useful. It might not be as great as the other GPS mapping softwares I’ve mentioned earlier, but it’s better than not having one. So for those of you living in these countries in Asia, this might be just what you have been looking for.
Also as we all know, roads in Asian countries keep changing due to all the rapid construction. MapKing updates their maps fairly often. For example, the map of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia has been updated twice since I bought it, once in May 2006 and again recently in December 2006. Therefore, there should not be any worries that the maps you buy today will go out of date in the future.
For those of you using version 7 like me, the new 2007 version includes new functions such as:
- Add more different profile
- Compass mode
- Open Tour book (need to connect to pc to edit)
- Support VGA monitor
- Nine intelligent map query (index/Crossing/ Q-find/POI/ Position/City/Town/ Lat/Long/Keyword)
MapKing can be purchased from their website and prices differ from country to country. Usually it is around $35.99.

Your article is very informative and am wondering whether or not there is a GPS map software for the entire South Korea not limited to Seoul?
Does the map software comes in the SD card and can it be used with any GPS?
Thank you for your input.
