Nokia N800 Internet Tablet First Thoughts
The N800 was announced and immediately available at CompUSA for $400. Brighthand just put up their first thoughts – ArsTechnica has their review HERE. Surprisingly Nokia touting this as Internet tablet but the connectivity seems to be on the light side…(Unfortunately Brighthand did not bring this up). This Tablet only relies on WiFi hotspot or use your Bluetooth phone as modem. No 3G capability built-in nor USB port or PC/Express card slot for a add-on EVDO-HSDPA connectivity possible. And since it runs Linux, I don’t know if there is any GPS navigation software available other than the Nokia navigation package that is only available in Europe only.
Would this be nice if Nokia incorporate Skype to add a VOIP phone to this. I have not seen any mention about it. There are lot of blogs still refering this as a phone/Internet tablet device even without the cellphone capability.
There is no offline PIM function available, you have to rely on Web based PIM functions (e.g. Google Calendar, etc.) so when you are not connected. I am wondering what can you do with this beside listening to music or watching video stored on the limited capacity SD/MMC cards.
I thought initially this would’ve been a perfect device for soccer mom, unfortunately there is no Wi-Fi signal yet on our community soccer field!

It is Gizmo voip compatible and they are definitely working on Skype, documented on the Nokia website. Because it runs on the open source OS there are tons of applications you can install, including several PIM’s
