What AppleTV is Not!

After digested some news from yesterday, I have time to go over the AppleTV, I was somewhat under-whelmed by the final product. Apple just keeps maintaining its closed architecture even on this set top device, that I can summarize as an your PC/Mac extension. The AppleTV relies on iTunes running on the host computers (PC/Mac). Therefore, you can not do the following:

  • Buy songs/video directly from AppleTV
  • There is an USB2 port in the back, but is is not connectable to other peripherals (hard drive)
  • It can not play DivX or codec that are not supported by iPod
  • It can only works on widescreen HDTV (720p)
  • It can not open VIDEO_TS files? Like from ripped DVDs
  • It can not run as DVR (Tivo)
  • It can not connect to web services other than iTunes. Without the ability to pull down content from elsewhere on the net (such as YouTube or Flickr for example).

The device feels too heavily tied to the iTunes download store. Additionally, the Apple TV faces competition from the already entrenched XBox 360 – with its newly announced IPTV capabilities – along with Sling Media’s soon-to-be released SlingCatcher.

The new good thing is that Apple TV will have a built-in 40GB hard drive, so that users have the option to store some contents (photos, etc.) on the device – which can be synced with a PC or Mac running iTunes. As well as the Podcast listening/watching streamed from iTunes.

The “open architect” alternative solution is the new Netgear Digital Entertainer HD, which will be able to support more codecs, YouTube (is coming), external storage, etc..
