Good Move on Zune Subscription Model: Free Zune?

One of the great “not well known” features of Zune is the music subscription “All you can eat” plan currently priced at under $15/month.

To boot the marketshare, Microsoft Zune marketing director Jason Reindorp is hinting at a welcome development on the subscription front: “The subscription service was a solid move on our part. We’ve seen 65% growth in our subscription base, although the number is still small. It could be better and it could become different — we’re looking at what other flavors of subscriptions there could be. We’ve been looking at the subscription model where you pay a certain amount and you essentially get the cell phone for free.”

I think it is a great innovative move from Microsoft. The cheap or free hardware has been used with cellphone carriers in the US for long time with great success. Why not take advantage of that approach.

Changing the Zune color (Pink, Orange, Red) is certainly not enough to boot Zune market share.
