MobiTV: "TV on your Cell Phone" Reviewed by Arstechnica
Fans of portable TV have many more choices today. You can buy episodes of your favorite television show on iTunes and watch them on your iPod, or cap shows on your PC and move them to a portable video player of your choice. If you’ve got one of over 30 different cell phones and service with just about any US cellular provider other than Verizon, there’s another option: MobiTV.
MobiTV bills itself as “leading the convergence of television, film, and music across the mobile and broadband markets.” Translated from the original marketing speak, it means that MobiTV is the biggest provider of video services for cellular subscribers. The channel lineup varies by provider (and by country—MobiTV also offers service in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and the UK) and consists of programming from NBC, ESPN, the Discovery family of networks, FOX, and many others. MobiTV is generally priced around $9.99 per month, but that price may vary depending on the cellular carrier. You may also want to get a data plan to avoid additional charges from using MobiTV.
MobiTV sent Ars a Treo 750 with the service preloaded. We had over 40 channels to choose from, an unlimited data plan, and a nice-looking smartphone. It was time to get off the couch, leave the house, and watch some TV….
