Lala to open DRM-free digital music store with free streaming access to songs

Lala, a company best known for an excellent CD-swapping service (user sells/buys their CD’s with points) and, is betting the company on a new plan: provide access to streaming music, on demand, for free, and to do so legally.

The company is prepared to make $140 million in license payments to various music labels over the next two years; so you can get the whole experience legally.

Basically, Lala allows users to scan their hard drives for music, then upload songs to a “digital locker.” If Lala already has a copy on its servers, this step can be skipped, and Lala’s version is used. This music then becomes available from anywhere that the user logs into a Lala account.

The idea is that it’s iTunes, but on the web. Playlists can be created and managed, and iPods can even be filled directly from the site.
