New York Times & Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)
Faced to the decline of readership due to the online contents. The print newspaper companies such the New York Times to explore new ways to keep them alive.
I ran in to a demo at Microsoft about Windows Presentation Foundation (coded name Avalon), a subsystem that the NYT just made available to its readers. (WPF) is the next-generation presentation sub-system for Windows. It provides developers and designers with a unified programming model for building rich Windows smart client user experiences that incorporate UI, media, and documents.
Basically you can subscribe to NYT TimesReader service (30-day free trial) to get a WPF client loaded, this client will download 7 days worth of NYT Newspaper so you can take your Windows laptop with the contents for offline viewing. The look and feel is very similar to the print version with additional features that WPF offers.
Microsoft Silverlight is a subset of WPF, which provide the same experience but Silverlight is Web-based, which requires user to be online.
