Nintendo DS: A Perfect MP3 Player for Kids

Nintendo DS is an affordable great game console, but I think the DS is also a perfect MP3 player for kids too. Using some “home brew” open source software. You can have a nice MP3 player with a clean and intuitive ”skinned” interface as shown in the video. Why it is great for kids? The Nintendo DS has its own speakers, which provide nice stereo sound but not too loud and since there is no need for headphones or earbuds; you don’t have to worry for their fragile eardrums.

If anybody is wondering, extra hardware is required to use home brew applications. These are known as flash cards, and come in two forms, known as “slot-2″ which occupy the GameBoy Advance Pak slot of the DS also known as Slot 2 (hence the name), and “slot-1″ which occupy the slot the DS games are inserted into aka Slot-1. These cards come in two varieties each themselves. Those with Built In flash memory, and those which use removable storage media such as SD cards. One of the most reliable brands is M3/G6. These are two different card brands made by the same company, the difference being that M3 products use removable memory cards, and G6 products have built in memory, which makes them more expensive, but there is also less hassle messing about with memory cards. however, Slot-2 devices will require a device known as a “PassMe” these come in various forms and brands. For a more definitive guide to these please go to :

This site has a list of all known PassMe cards which have been released, as well as the pros and cons of each one.

Slot-1 Devices however, don’t have this problem. They are used directly from the DS’s main slot, so they nto only work more efficiently, but can be cheaper, less hassle, and are easier to use. A good example of a Slot-1 device is an R4: Revolution for DS. The team which make these cards also supply the hard ware for the M3 Slot-1 Device known as an M3 Simply DS. Due to its brand, M3 is more expensive than R4, but also comes in fancier packaging, but the actual product is more or less the same, other than the sticker ont he front of the card and the actual interface, the only difference in which is, instead of saying “R4DS Vx.xx” it says “M3S Vx.xx”

The application shown in the video is known as MoonShell, and is generally considered to be the best multimedia application on the Nintendo DS, mainly due to the fact that Nintendo have yet to release their own. 99.9% of home brew applications are free, and I have yet to come across anyone who has charged for one. If you require any more assistance, please got to any of the following sites, forums and ask. 90% of the time, you will get very good help, but unfortunately, as with all sites on the internet, you will also get… “insane” people.
