DigiTimes: Wintek to ship touch screen panels for new Apple iPods Next Month
Report from DigiTimes/Taiwan suggest that Apple may launch next month a new iPod that looks, feels and works like an iPhone, but without the phone part.
Taiwan-based Wintek will be the panel supplier of Apple’s new iPod video, according to sources at upstream suppliers. Apple is set to launch a next-generation iPod video in August with the new products featuring a touch screen panel similar to the iPhone, the sources noted.
Wintek declined to comment on the news citing customer confidentiality. The Taiwan-based panel maker will begin shipping capacitive touch screen panels in the second half of 2007, according to sources. The company noted that its touch screen panels will be used with customers’ own software and ICs. In related news, TPK Holding, the subsidiary of Taiwan-based TrendON Touch Technology is supplying indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass to Balda. TrendON Touch Technology is a partner of Balda, the sources said. Apple is also reportedly placing touch screen panel orders with Balda for the iPhone.
