WeBot: Access your Media (Music + Pictures) Anywhere
We all have few computers, laptop and mobile devices. All of them would have some media files scattered. Access to your contents most likely happens at local device if you are not using tools such Orb or SlingMedia…
WeBot is a new free Web-based service that gathers it all together and lets you access all of your media anywhere, anytime. WeBot only allows YOU to access your content in Streaming fashion. (No Sharing No Download)
| You first need to create a login account at WeBot.com | ![]() |
| Download a small client to each of your desktop/laptop that have media contents (mp3, jpg) to be accessed remotely – Each “server” will be called a “Bot” | |
| After you installed and launch the program, WeBot actually launches a new page in your browser (I tested in FireFox and Safari) from witch you can specify what folders you grant access remotely. (You click on the folder icon on top). I suggest that you create a WeBot folder under your My Picture and My Music Folder for this purpose. | |
| On any browser (let’s call “Client”) you can get to WeBot.com, log-in. You will see the same GUI that will show your contents (mp3 files) that you can stream. (just drag the song to “Collection Contents” windows to create a playlist and playback | |
| If you select picture (click “camera” icon on top you will see the thumbnails of your pictures. You can enlarge each picture by clicking on it. I found the enlarged picture is a bit grainy. The Slideshow works great too. |
|
…..One more thing: WeBot really shines when you use the Apple iPhone or the new iPod Touch with Safari browser. WeBot has a perfect mobile interface that basically shows your contents as if they are stored on the devices (over WiFi connection, of course) – This is a great capability to overcome the limited storage on the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Unfortunately, I tried on the Windows Mobile PIE, it does not work!
If you don’t have the iPhone, you can however, test out this mobile interface with Firefox or Safari by accessing http://m.webot.com
I found out WeBot via Om Malik. WeBot is currently in limited beta. Om graciously shares registration code “GigaOM†This will let you in their private Beta.

I’ve got WeBot working on 5 of my pc’s and macs and have acccess to over 250 gbs of music and images. w.o.w.
I love being able to access all my tunes and music from both my wifes PC and my own. It’s a real hoot listening to my tunes while showing off the grandkids to friends when I’m half way around the world.
