This is not the first attempt to convince the customer to give up the feel of having a print book in their hands. Unfortunately all have seen with limited success. Amazon hopes the only way the Kindle will gain greater adoption is the easy of access to a wide variety of content. Amazon, being the largest book store in the world with 88,000 books, including 100 of 112 current New York Times Best Sellers is the best place to start.

In addition to the vast book collection, Kindle users can subscribe to newspapers/magazines as well as blogs and the online Wikipedia. Readers receive instantly the contents anytime via the built-in 3G broadband-like EV-DO from Sprint. The transmission cost is cleverly included in a monthly fees that cover also the downloaded contents (most ebooks cost $10, newspaper subscriptions: $10 – $15; magazines: $1 – $2; blogs are $1)

The Kindle has a 6-inch E-Ink electronic paper display with a resolution 600 by 800 pixel/167 ppi/ 4-level grayscale. The dimensions are 7.5 inches tall, 5.3 inches wide, 0.7 inches thick. It weighs 10.3 ounces. Sports an internal memory that can store approx. 200 books.

The Kindle is available now for $400 on Amazon’s web site.
