Is The Screen Resolution Important to You?

28 February, 2008 Posted by SolSie As Review, Windows Mobile

When the stand-alone PDAs were still popular. The few devices featuring VGA screen  seemed to make big difference in popularity contest. Granted the image, text, Web page rendering were spectacular (see some comparison HERE!) but the downsize is more computing, memory, battery needed, however the stand alone PDA could easily overcome the shortcomings.

As the industry moves further to the converged device or Smartphone(PDA+Phone). The new devices have different imperatives such constant on Cellphone radio, quicker response time, longer battery life, etc.. The device manufacturers focus more on QVGA screen. Beside, the popular smaller screen size (2.8″) would also make the pixels look better.

The previous assessments were applicable to Windows Mobile powered devices.   The iPhone is a major exception, Apple has demonstrated how to achieve the great combination between response time, stunning visual screen resolution and acceptable battery life without much compromise.

Recently E-Ten has made available few Smartphones supporting VGA such the E-Ten Glofiish 650. We are wondering if it is worth the effort of having this higher resolution and sacrifice the compromises.

PocketNow,s Brandon Minivan posted a video comparison between the two E-TEN Glofiish X800 (2.8″ 480×640 VGA screen) and the Glofiish X500 (standard 2.8″ 240×320 QVGA screen).

Unfortunately, the lo-res YouTube video can’t not do justice, but still it is worth watching.

VGA for me, period… : )

My Advantage’s 5” screen’s the winner, used to own a O2 Xda Mini which now i have difficulty viewing stuff on due to me getting to used to my current HTC Advantage, but i still love my Mini though… : )

I love VGA. Actually I’ve got one of the first VGA devices out there - my ASUS A730 (not the W with Wi-fi).

Why 3′5 inch VGA is minimum for me? I luv reading books - and in Russia we can actually download even the latest ones. QVGA fonts are too “square” so my eyes get tired faster.

I don’t like “all-in-one things” (don’t want to stay without GSM after watching 2 movies), I have this PPC with 50-buck 8GB CF card. This capacity is enough for my FLAC music files and everything else. The only disadvantsge of this device is mediocre battery life due to high energy consumption of the screen.

I’m good with my older SE K750i - and I have no reason to switch to another cell phone. Frankly speaking I even consider buying iAudio player (the iAudio 7) for even better quality music. So my cell is for calls, my player is for music and my PDA is for books, games and tasks. OR I can buy all-in-one if it gives me 5 days between charges for all these things.

Regards. :)

I had a Pocket PC 2003 SE HP iPAG 4700 and had it on VGA 480×640 screen resolution. I used it ALL the time. Now I have an iPAQ Travel Companion with Windows Mobile 5 and I hate the QVGA screen. I’ve been looking for an app to change screen size but cannot find one.

Anyone knows of anything I can use or someone working on an app?

Have fun
Abe

Can you clarify: what do you meant by changing screen size?
The HX4700 is using 640 x 480 resolution: BTW you can find a WM5 ROM for the iPaq easily.
The iPaqr Travel companion is running 320 x 240 resolution, app running on the smaller resolution will only show half of VGA screen.
