Rumor: Microsoft offers Netflix movies over Xbox Live?

Eyes on the keynote address at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco today. Microsoft Xbox Live exec John Schappert will be on the agenda

Microsoft is expected to announce something that would make them a Big Entertainment Player — not just a software maker.

This big thing would be a partnership between Microsoft Xbox and Netflix to allow Netflix subscribers to download/stream movies to their TV via the Xbox360.

The partnership makes completely sense for Netlix to bring download rental movies on the living room TV (from the current PC only streaming capability). And for Microsoft Xbox to get more user base from a house name base.

The partnership is for both Netflix and Microsoft presumably to target the AppleTV movie rental model and the Sony PS3 game console (and its triumphant Blu-Ray player)

“(Microsoft) believes that home media is the gateway to Internet dominance, and although they would love the Media Center (product) to be the access point, they have had more success with the Xbox 360 and with Xbox Live,” says Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan. [Via MSNBC]

PS: On a side note: We might see MS announces a Blu-Ray external player for Xbox360
