Intel Introduces Atom Centrino Chip for Mobile Device
Intel announced a new line of low-cost/low-power CPUs called “Atom”. The new chip is designed for the MID-centric product family such Asus Eee, OLPC, Origami, etc…
Intel imposes that manufacturers can only use the new chip set if the device has an integrated graphics co-processor and a wireless radio.
Intel’s goal is for the company to get more presence in handheld devices. The chip itself is tiny at less than 25mm square, has a TDP of 0.6W – 2.5W, as compared to a 35W TDP for a “typical” Core 2 Duo. [Via Arstechnica]
