Decision, Decision

My brother is asking my advice for non-phone device to buy.

His main purpose for this small mobile device is  Skype  calling and good Web browsing experience.

I am thinking between the Nokia N810, Asus EePC 7” or Asus Eepc 900 (BTW, JKKMobile has a great video review on his site).

Both the Nokia N810 and the small EeePC cost about $400 but the 9″ EeePC is still run around $600.

What do you guys think?

I have the 7″ Eee and its very good for its price (I got teh 4g for $330 witha google checkout deal awhile ago). Its handled video skype chats very well for me. If I was getting into the price range of the 9″ Eee, I’d also look at the new HP thats been released.

I for one have a N800 and LOVE it. I’ve been looking to upgrade to the N810 but am sitting on the fence as I’m not sure if I should get the wimax edition or not. I don’t have wimax in my area, but that should change eventually. I’ve looked at the EEE pc’s and while they are nice, they won’t fit in your pocket. I have a bluetooth keyboard that tethers to the n800 and it works great for text entry and the n800 also tethers to my phone so my unlimited data plan allows me to work everywhere. The EEE’s that I looked at had no bluetooth so tethering would not be an option unless someone has already figured out the bluetooth stack for the EEE. The n800 has some office like apps, namely gnumeric (spreadsheet) and text editors. Recently, there has been some work on porting Ubuntu to the platform as well. Pidgin for IM, Pan for usenet, Canola for music, video, podcasts, youtube… RSS, email, Skype, Gizmo, a startling amount of games.. (Red Alert, Jagged Alliance2 among others) just ported.. GB emulators…Dos Emulation, Mac Emulation.. I could go on for an hour. The same could be said for an EEE I’m sure. The eee doesn’t to my knowledge have a touch screen. There is a huge user community over at http://www.internettablettalk.com and there are new apps being written for the 800 all the time. The N810 has integrated GPS and keyboard now too! The canola dev team is working on a “car port” of the excellent software so that you could listen to music, view maps and ODBII (telemetry) data all on one interface!! If that isn’t cool, I don’t know what is. Did I mention this fits in your pocket?? It’s an excellent piece of hardware and nokia has been dropping updates to the core OS often. Ultimately, I’m in love with mine…. :) If you have more questions, feel free to drop me an email!!

Thank you so much for all your advices. My brother is finally here and I tok him to the store to try them out. At the end he prefers the Asus Eee (2GB) + 2GB SD. He actually bought 2 of them to bring back to Europe.
I am jealous with the Euros…

Just received the N810 from LowMarkup.com for a test drive.

Glad to hear you decided on it! If you need a little help with things, let me know. I know it can be daunting…

Thanks Rich,
Try to get familiar with a total new platform is definite a daunting task. I went on the http://www.internettablettalk.com to watch the great walk through video part I and II.
More questions to come..

You can find lots of apps at http://www.maemo.org and there are several that are worth mentioning right away. Canola for audio/video podcasts, last.fm and youtube… Pidgin for instant messaging (all major clients supported – even myspace and facebook) Maemo Mapper for GPS, Streamtuner (listening to shoutcast audio streams) fbreader for ebooks, (DRM not supported but conversion programs for .lit conversion are available. These are the best in class apps that I’ve used. There are others that do the same sorts of things but I find that these are the single best ones. Coming from the pocket pc world as you have, it’s missing a real good PIM for contacts and calender, but I would suggest looking at Garnet (a full palm emulator) if you really need that. Of course it’s a different breed of device than a ppc, but it’s very capable, has a very nice xterm program if you are familiar with linux and a whole host of tools that you might not find elsewhere. The community at internettablettalk is very responsive and I think you will find yourself right at home. I know there will be stumbling blocks – feel free to message me here or via email.
