Microsoft is Working on Spherical Surface

Last week Microsoft debuted the pilot program exposing a Surface table computer at few AT&T retail stores (Atlanta, San Antonio, the San Francisco Bay Area, and two stores in New York) for customer use.

At the aforementioned stores, user can interact with the 30-inch surface computer to  explore the features of eight presented mobile devices including Samsung BlackJack II, Sony Ericsson w580i, LG Shine, Sony Ericsson z750, BlackBerry Curve 8310, Pantech Duo, Samsung a737, and Motorola v3xx) just by placing the device on the surface table..

Long Zheng, a Microsoft Watcher, recently discovered a Microsoft Research video which includes 2 second segment that nobody had noticed.

Between 3:57 and 3:59 the video shows a glimpse of what looks like the Sphere Microsoft Surface computer being used.

The spherical geometry could facilitate the simultaneous use of several users at the same time (e.g. map searching, directory reading, etc..), but it is not practical to place an object on it. Nevertheless it is an interesting research project that hopefully will reach the consumer soon.
