MediaRoom: An IPTV Solution from Microsoft

Microsoft Mediaroom is an IPTV platform that carriers such AT&T (USA), BT (UK), T-Mobile (Germany), etc..are using to distribute TV over IP Network to home consumers.

In US, AT&T is offering their U-Verse service that essentially consists of a set top box to feed the TV signals to the home TV over IP network. Users can receive, playback TV contents including HDTV channels, DVR recording; quick channel changing; multiple channel records simultaneously , multi-room viewing with additional set top boxes, etc.

Unlike the existing Cable TV or Satellite TV that only downstream the video signal, Mediaroom’s most remarkable feature is 2-way transmission, meaning user can actually interact with the TV channels. For instance: during a sporting event, viewer can select different mics source, view stats, select different camera sources, etc.

Of course, operator can embed additional application on top of each program to enrich viewing experience.
