In 2006, OpenDocument specification was “approved for release as an ISO and IEC International Standard” under the name ISO/IEC 26300:2006. The OpenDocument format is used in open source software as well as in  proprietary software. This includes office suites (both offline and web-based) and individual applications such as word-processors, spreadsheets, presentation, and data management applications. Prominent office suites supporting OpenDocument include OpenOffice.org, KOffice, Google Docs, NeoOffice, Zoho, IBM Lotus Symphony and Corel WordPerfect Office X4.

Common Open Document File extensions are:

  • .OFT for word processing
  • .ODS for spreadsheets
  • .ODP for presentations
  • .ODG for graphics
  • .ODF for formulas, mathematical equations

Unfortunately, Microsoft Office  only delivers the ODF support in the first half of 2009 when it releases MS Office 2007 Service Pack 2.

Mac OS X 10.5 offers both a new TextEdit version and QuickLook feature supporting the OpenDocument Text format (albeit with some formatting loss).

Third parties have announced development of conversion software (including plug-ins and filters) to support OpenDocument on Microsofts products. Currently there are nine packages of conversion software.

Sun Microsystems has made a plug-in for all MS Office to add ODF support that you can download today. The plug-in allows MS users to load, edit and save file in ODF format. Several languages are supported.
