Add Pizzazz To Your WinXP Low-Cost SubNotebook
All the reviews for the low cost subcompact notebook including the latest Asus EeePC 901 seem to indicate the MSI Wing is the overall winner with its adult-size keyboard, 10-inch wide screen, a very capable Atom processor (up to 1.9GHz). 5-plus hours of battery life, and $499 price make it the best all-around mini-notebook to date. The MSI Wind comes first with the Windows XP version and later with the Linux version ($399). I still think the WinXP, with its familiar interface could be the most appealing to most users. Especially for those with a broadband USB dongle.
This class of notebook reportedly will be very popular for 2008’s back-to-school season for our youngster. To increase the appeal, MSI already contracted Skinit to make several cool skins to order for about $30 each.
But I admit the WinXP interface standard is very “un-cool” compared to an Apple notebook. So if you plan to get one, here is how to fix this problem:
Since the device comes with enough horse power and a decent graphic capability. You don’t have to settle for the boring XP Bliss look.
With a simple tweak, you can add a much more visual appealing interface similar to more modern OS such Windows Vista or Mac OSX.
The best and easiest method is to purchase WindowBlinds from Stardock, a great and easy to use utility that cost you about $20. You can enjoy so many free wonderful WB themes/skins with various customizable (blur, shadow, transparency) options.
The second option is a free hack to patch uxtheme.dll. You can use the Uxtheme Multi-patcher. Just unpack and start the application (no installation required) and click on Patch to patch uxtheme.dll. The software checks the operating system and asks if the findings are correct. If the information is correct click OK. You then can use several Visual Style themes located HERE!.
