IBM Sets New Record In Computing
IBM has achieved a new computing milestone. The IBM’s Roadrunner supercomputer, developed for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, has broken a historic barrier: one thousand trillion calculations per second — or one “petaflop.”
Roadrunner, which was developed at IBM’s Poughkeepsie lab, will be delivered to the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico this summer. Once installed, it will be devoted to safeguarding America’s national security, as well as for research into areas ranging from genomics, to astronomy, to climate change.
In IBM’s long legacy of technological breakthroughs, there have been many highlights. From the System/360, to Deep Blue, to Blue Gene
