The Nokia N810 represents a new, forward thinking approach to the mobile web. The hardware itself is impressive. Despite it is a Nokia device, it is not a phone. The unit sports a responsive, touch screen device with a slide out keyboard, the device acts more as a mobile mini Linux PC. As this serves as an introduction to the device, lets take a look at the hardware.

image Contained within the tiny package, the front face of the device is a metallic blue that gives the device a professional appearance. In the top left corner, the first thing you notice is the front facing webcam. Just above it is a light sensor that adjusts the screen brightness as you move indoors and out. Slide the whole screen up, and you find a decent and usable keyboard. Some others worth mentioning – a MiniSD slot for additional capacity, a built in GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth (pairable to your mobile phone).  This gives you quite a bit of connectivity options.

image While only a limited number of software applications are installed upon first turning it on, the versatility of the device begins to show itself once you begin adding the necessary repository’s to the device. Because this device is based on Linux, almost all software available is freely available and licence under the GPL, and as such is open and available for you to change if it suits you and you have the programming skills necessary. The list of applications grows by the day and as of this writing, has grown to 200 readily installable applications.

Later, I will focus on some of the best of these applications. One of the best things about the device is simply, if there isn’t an application that does something that you need, there is probably someone working on that functionality.

If you have questions about this device please drop a comment, I will try my best to answer.

The Nokia N810 is available HERE for $349.95.
