AutoBlog Tests the iPhone GPS Capabilities

To simply answer the the question: “ Should’ve bought the Garmin”, driving experts at AutoBlog put the new 3G iPhone GPS to the test.

image Until now, few apps such Twitterific can use some location based facilities (I am not sure if they come from cell tower triangulation or the GPS chip). Unlike Windows Mobile, there is no navigation software available (e.g., Tomtom) using offline map to iPhone users.

Nevertheless, Apple relies on Google Map online service to provide the current location and ability to pinpoint the destination and directions but not in turn-to-turn fashion. While the idea is good, since there is no need to store large maps on the device, this method has many drawbacks such no precise turn-to-turn directions relative to vehicle exact location and when in spotty cellphone coverage area, the service is very unreliable and disruptive at times. We hope that Apple will open up its GPS API so other more capablle Navigation apps can be available to iPhone users. For now there is no competition between the stand alone GPS units and the iPhone…..Yet.
