Push PIM

image Lots of mobile devices are bundled with MS Exchange synchronization services for PIM (email, calendar, contacts, ..) including the new iPhone 2.0 devices. The Exchange services require either a corporate account, paid Exchange hosted account or the subscription based Apple MobileMe.

NuevaSync is a new free service allowing direct, over-the-air, native synchronization of smart phones and PDA devices with Google PIM, e-mail and calendaring services. NuevaSync does not need any software installed on your device because it uses synchronization protocols that are already built in.

With NuevaSync and Google you can basically push email, calendar, contacts from Google to your Mobile device for free.

How-to’s

Beaugiles.net has the step-by-step tutorial if you need. But below is a summary that I am confident most of you can get this going fairly quickly:

  • You need a Gmail Account, if you don’t have one, you  can sign up here.
  • NuevaSync reccommends you verify your account, by filling out a simple CAPTCHA.
For regular Gmail and Calendar accounts go to:
    https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
For Google Apps accounts go to:
https://www.google.com/a/YOURDOMAIN.com/UnlockCaptcha (substitute ‘YOURDOMAIN’ with your domain!)
  • Go to NuevaSync, and create a new account.
  • When you’ve verified your account, login to set your settings.  For Calendar. Click ‘Change’ next to the Calendar option, and choose ‘Google’ (or disabled if you dont want to sync your calendar). Click Change to confirm. On the next page, click the link to configure your account.. Click Save. Head back to the status page on NuevaSync, where you’ll hit ‘change’ next to Contacts. Here, you can choose from your Google or your Plaxo contacts.

Voila, you already set up the online Exchange part.

Depending on what mobile device you have, ‘Microsoft Exchange’ services require the below information

  • Email, put in the one you used for NuevaSync registration.
  • Your Username is the one you chose when you registered for NuevaSync, and same for the password.
  • For “Server”. Enter “www.nuevasync.com”

That’s it, it’s done! You can play around with your push/fetch settings in the Settings.app on your device as well.

A good free push service is mail2web. They provide exchange type push email using activestink. Free plan gives you outlook web access (limited), but will push mail, contacts, and calendar to your wm device. I used it on my tilt. Not sure if it works on IP3G yet. Haven’t tried.

Nuevasync is, bar-none, the best and perhaps ONLY solution for those who want to sync their google calendars online with their iPhone or iPod touch, and not have to pay for it in either cash or time due to the hassle. The account takes all of about 10 minutes to setup (on the web, and your device), and creates a FREE and reliable push service for your google calendar (which should be free, anyway!!!).
My only complaint is that the service is so new that they lack a privacy statement; but the president of the company has assured me it is coming soon! (Oh yeah, they’re VERY prompt in responding to feedback, as well!).
Kudos nuevasync! You deserve donations as well as praise!

P.S. If you’re using the service to sync an iPhone to your google account info (e.g., calendar, contacts, tasks) it makes no sense to sync mail, as GMail is already an option.
Yeah, mail2web will create an exchange server; but it (the free version) will NOT sync with google services… so really what’s the point? Unless you want to switch to using mail2web’s calendar…

Hi Mick, we posted our privacy policy on the site earlier today.
Thanks for your kind words.
