Use a Mobile Broadband USB Modem on EeePC
The low cost sub-notebooks have tremendous capabilities especially in the cloud computing environment, which requires Internet connection.
Unfortunately WiFi hotspots are not omnipresent and mobile users often use a mobile broadband device (PCMCIA, PC Express or USB form factors) for their laptop to connect to Internet. On the EeePC, on USB port can be used.
Windows or Apple laptop users would install the provided driver and a dialer client software. Unfortunately, there is no official support for Linux on the low-cost-subcompact notebook, which often runs a flavor of Linux OS. (e.g., Asus EeePC runs with Linux Xandros). Thankfully, there is a way to make it work….
- You can download the free utility USB_MODESWITCH (HERE!); copy usb_modeswitch to /sbin/ directory and the configuration file usb_modeswitch.conf to /etc/ (in terminal shell window using sudo or su).
- Plug in the Broadband USB device to the EeePC
- Launch the utility: sudo /sbin/usb_modeswitch (this will unmount the default USB flash drive)
- You should be able to make a new connection and select your Broadband USB device
