Weekend Random Thoughts on Apple App Store

13 July, 2008 Posted by SolSie As Software, iPhone

The iPhone 2.0 firmware offers many third applications to be purchased or free downloaded. Some of the most overnight sensation are the free AOL Radio, Pandora and Last.FM. These apps let iPhone owners listen to many stations, including CBS radio for free.

imageAudio is streamed over the iPhone’s mobile Internet connection or WiFi. The sound quality they provide is reportedly as good as listening to a CD.

All of these exciting apps begin to answer the nagging question about how much latitude Apple and wireless carriers will allow to applications that may cannibalize their own business models. Streaming media, of course, can use a lot of bandwidth. And it can compete both with Apple’s iTunes store and wireless carrier hopes for making money from over-the-air music and video.  The same thing can apply to Truveo VoIP app we mentioned yesterday. VoIP app can compete with the wireless carrier for long distance international calls.

Furthermore, in this post, Apple CEO Steve Jobs seems to commit to the selling of its hardware and grab the largest chunk of world mobile market. its peripheral businesses such selling music, apps will not be financially significant to Apple business model.

The success of the iPhone allows Apple to have the power to pretty much dictate the business guidelines to the wireless carriers  the way that we’ve never seen before.

As a result, In addition to a new bar that has been raised by Apple for the quality and functionality of its product along with a highly aggressive pricing,  consumer will enjoy much better product at lower price and especially more third party services (TV, Music, Location based apps, etc..)  using the data network. Thanks Steve!
