Yahoo’s Secret Sauce: Zimbra
Last October we shared with you Zimbra, a Web email/productivity company that produces Outlook similar tool.
Since then, Yahoo acquired them and few days ago, Yahoo announced its first Beta release of its desktop client with transparent online/offline capability and more importantly the office collaboration suite to make this a worthy contender to Google Gmail and Google Apps. (Although some Google Apps already have online/offline capability. Gmail/Calendar and Contacts are still lacking this feature).
Let’s dive in to its main components: Email, Contact, Calendar, Documents, Tasks, Briefcase, Mobile Client after the jump!
The email client has a very similar look to the popular Yahoo Ajax Web email .
The client works well with Yahoo! Mail Plus, AOL, Gmail and any POP / IMAP email accounts
Contrary to 2GB outlook email storage size, Zimbra has no limit. Yahoo Zimbra email client works online and offline using Firefox PRSM engine.
The client uses heavily Ajax capability with drag & drop interface; separate signature per account , Work even when you are not online- messages you send are saved in the "Outbox" and are sent when you connect again Easily compose, edit, delete, reply, or make drafts,
For Gmail fans, knowing that Conversation Views, tags, and search are included too.
Yahoo also integrates mash-up the email with its map tool, with one click user can view addresses as Yahoo! Maps, the app automatically detects your location and find points of interest with Yahoo! Local, etc..
