Fast Input on Windows Mobile with Swype

9 September, 2008 Posted by SolSie As Software, Windows Mobile (8) Comment

image Swype is a new keyboard input method for any touch screen device. Invented by the original T9 inventor Cliff Kushler..

You essentially first tap the letter, hold you finger, move (swipe) to the remaining letter and lift your finger when it is done.

The product team focus on Windows Mobile and TabletPC for now but they eye the iPhone and Symbian platforms in a very near future.

We have seen many other similar methods to fast input, but this demo looks very promising, check out the video courtesy of Cnet.

It looks cool and I want to give it a try ASAP.

However, things are a bit confusing. It’s said to be available for WM (I’ve read that, your wording is more careful SolSie :) ), but at the site I can only register for BETA. And then at the Partners page of their website they say that the main business model is OEM licensing. So while I hear that it’s available, it will in fact only be available during betatesting and then when the beta expires, I will have to hope it is integrated with a device I like?

I hope they also just put it out to the consumer market like Resco Keyboard Pro and similar software. :)

And by the way, JKOnTheRun has an article on why Swype is nothing new, you might want to check it out. :)

It is hard to tell until we actually play each of them. I have tried the other methods and I found they require lots of practice to achieve what we see in the demo.

Well, at the moment there is no downloads, while there is a keyboard called SlideIT working on the same idea and free demo can be
downloaded at http://dasur.co.il/Download.php

Going to give it a try!

$40 is way too much for me to spend on one software title though, so it will be just the trial for me.

Thanks for the tip!

We will see when we get some beta test out but there are a few products out that are similar:

Swype
SlideIT
ShapeWriter

SlideIT is the only one that has a downloadable version out i’ve tried it and i must say i’m pretty impressed. the slideIT keyboard is a little small but you can also do graf on the side. overall i’m excited to see the other two come out!
