Freedom Doesn’t Come Cheap with Apple
Hong Kong will be the first place on the planet that Apple sells unlocked iPhone that user can activate with any carrier of choice. Freedom doesn’t come cheap. The smaller iPhone goes for for about $695 (5,400 Hong Kong dollars) and the larger sells for $798 (6,200 HK dollars),
The "iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier," the site states. "Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."
Note: In Europe Apple-picked Carriers might sell a non-contract iPhone.

Hong Kong is not the first place where iPhone 3G can be purchased without Simlock.
Here in Belgium, we can buy unlocked iPhone 3G in the Mobistar shops since July. Mobistar is, indeed, an cellular operator, but Belgian law forbid the selling of simlocked phones.
@Phoenix2000, I meant in Hong Kong you can buy unlocked iPhone directly from Apple not through any operator.
Hi,
the main and most important point, is not where to buy it (Operator shop or Apple store), but that you can buy it free from any contract and without Simlock.
In Belgium, as i said, you can buy it non Simlocked, but i forgot to say that also it is coming with no contract. And this is the most important (i think).
So next time you’re going to Belgium, and want an iPhone 3G that you can you when back home with you own SIM card, just search for a Mobistar shop
