Google Chrome First Impressions

image After I downloaded and play with Chrome, the new Web browser from Google for few hours. I thought I would share some personal thoughts with you.

I purposely did not read any tutorials and review prior to my test to see how intuitive the experience will be.

The download from http://google.com/chrome (Windows only) and install went well without any hiccups, Chrome did not ask much question except asking me to shut down Firefox so it can import the settings, bookmarks. image

I started Chrome the first time and found the familiar overall  Google look from the dominance of color light blue and white with very few buttons and drop-down menu. The tabs are located on top of windows look weird for few seconds but I get used fairly fast.

The first tab shows the fast dial thumbnails without giving me way to customize my favorite sites but later I found these will be filled automatically as most visited sites.

I expected to find a Google search box similar to Firefox, but I can’t find one, later, I found the search argument shares the same box as the URL bar.

A quick jump on my heavy multimedia content riche sites, all the sites show in corrected format where IE7, IE6 or Opera could not.

Chrome seems to bundle Adobe Flash. Flash based video pops up and streams without problem. Same for Quicktime formatted contents. However Silverlight contents don’t work.

The speed seems very fast compared to FF especially on media rich content pages. I learned later that Chrome beats other browser hands-down in Java script.

The Incognito mode would be very convenience when browsing on work or somebody else’s computer, where Chrome promises not leaving any trace behind.

The drag from tab to separate window and vice-versa is cool, but I have not found the practical reason to do it yet.

I still miss my extension from Firefox, but I think Chrome is extremely good for normal browsing, the rendering speed and the good Web site format won my heart.

The first impressions and the discovery, install process earned my vote of confidence of 9/10.
