Pre-Loaded MP3 microSD cards are Coming

image A new site called slotMusic backed by SanDisk is in preparation for launch. The site is to promote the 1-GB microSD card that will be pre-loaded with DRM-free music from the big four music labels:  EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner. The mp3 files will be encoded at almost CD-quality at 320Kbit/s.

The business model based on the below assumptions:

  • image There are more people carrying microSD capable cellphones than iPod or Zune. These players can not accept external card. But Sandisk’s Sansa can.
  • Instant gratification. Just grab the fingernail size card, put in the cellphone to listen immediately, no download, no hotspot no sign-in to purchase, etc… At home, just copy to desktop freely. No need for conversion, burning, etc.
  • The cost will be comparable to CD but at lower production cost.

These pre-loaded cards should be available at Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores by Christmas. Don’t forget to keep a magnify glass around to enjoy the album art!
