Microsoft to Release “Windows Cloud”

image With the proliferation of the Netbook class of device, vendors have to rely on the old Windows/XP OS for familiarity of the user interface.  Microsoft might seize the opportunity to develop a modern but slim down version of Windows. At the same time, this move could position Microsoft to answer to Google, if they should move further with their Google Chrome, which has the potential to deliver Web apps that can run online or offline in addition to its normal duty of Web browsing.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO who spoke to an auditorium of IT managers at a Microsoft-sponsored conference in London confirmed a OS codenamed “Windows Cloud”, which is  an OS in its own right and it is not part of the Windows 7, is in the work.

Ballmer points out that Microsoft doesn’t envision its software products moving entirely off desktop PCs and onto the Internet. But Microsoft is working on a service that would let people do "light editing" of Office documents at places such as a public Internet kiosk, Ballmer said.
