Ugrade Your MegaPixel Camera to GiGaPixel Camera for Cheap
Partnering with Google, CMU and the NASA/Ames Intelligent Robotics Group. Gigapan Beta allows user equipped with normal digital camera to create pictures that look like they are taken with GigaPixel camera, meaning you can zoom in to see with incredible details.
Gigapan technology consists of:
- A robotic camera mount. (press release regarding the announcement on September 26). The device is capable of capturing multi-gigapixel, explorable panoramas with most off-the-shelf digital cameras. Introductory pricing for the beta device is $279. They’re looking for people to help! If you’re interested and have time to capture lots of panoramas in the next couple of months, please apply here no later than October 19. Applicants will be informed by October 26.
- A free software tool designed to prepare a panorama for gigapan.org and upload it to their servers. The uploader works with panoramas from any source, whether or not taken with an actual GigaPan device.
- A Web site where users can upload/share/browse panoramic GigaPixel pictures
GigaPan Stitcher is a free, easy-to-use application which assembles the hundreds (or thousands) of pictures taken by the GigaPan device into a single, very large panoramic image with minimal assistance from the user. Alternatively, existing free or professional stitching tools may be used.
In addition to being free of charge, both GigaPan Uploader and GigaPan Stitcher will be released as ‘open source’ software.
