image The momentum of the Netbook is still going strong, Intel Atom has been almost the only choice with Netbook makers and it enjoys very much the unexpected return.

But the competition will not sleep to let Intel having that exclusivity for long. Today Arm, the well known chip maker for smartphone made a departure from its strong hold mobile device by announcing a deal with Ubuntu. The deal will produce a version of the operating system for netbooks. The new operating system for Arm-powered machines looks set to be available in April 2009.

Rob Coombs, director of mobile marketing at Arm, said he expected to see the first devices running the version of Ubuntu by the time of the Computex show in June. The devices will be based around the Arm7 architecture and, in particular, the Cortex A8 and A9 processors.

The focus of the design aspect will be in video performance rendering to larger size screen (popular 10”), that something that Arm has not experienced and the battery life.

Arm-designed chips also drive many smartphones such as the G1 – the first phone powered by Google’s Android software. [Via BBC]
