We apologize for any confusion, inconvenience caused by the discrepancies between the device overview and the actual device specifications.

Traveler 619 is an entry-level unlocked 2.5G smartphone with touch-screen QVGA (320×240) display. It is designed for mobile field workers who want slightly larger QWERTY keyboard and screen (2.8″ instead of 2.5″). The device measures 4.92 in(L) x 2.8 in(W) x 0.61 in(H) and 6.49 oz. So, it is not as compact and sleek as Traveler 127.

Anyone who purchased Traveler 619, please contact Pharos customer support at 888-PHAROS-8 (888-742-7678) if you want to return the product.

Again, please accept our apology for any trouble that we might have caused.

Has anyone ordered and received this phone yet? I ordered 11/26 to ship 11/27 thru dell. 11/27 I was emailed about a delay and will ship 12/1. 12/1 another delay and will ship 12/3. 12/2 I cancelled order because I found this coupon code CTV2$2HX963145 drops the price to $169. Ordered under this and was told it will ship 12/4. We’ll as you guessed it, today another email showing a delay and now it will ship probably 12/12/08. C’mon Dell. Is this phone really available?

nflores December 4, 2008

I ordered this phone on 12/2 and according to DELL it will ship on 12/17. I don’t understand why it’s taking so long.

KennyO December 9, 2008

Well, just received another email from Dell and now my new EST shipping date is Dec 24. I’m now conviced this phone does not exist. Prove me wrong, anyone. Initial order 11/26

KennyO December 23, 2008

I was hoping to post a complete review of this phone but I’ve hit a snag. My phone is frozen and will not boot up. It is stuck at the “Pharos lighthouse of the 21st century,” screen. I’ve attempted to speak with someone at pharos and they will attempt (fingers crossed) to get me another phone so untill I get the other phone, I have no user review. Sorry.

YK December 23, 2008

hmm, what happened to all the recent comments? they appear to have disappeared…I guess giving out an offer for delayed shipment publicly was a bit much. =P

I ordered the 619 yesterday from Dell. Look forward to a phone I don’t have to locked into any one provider and has GPS that doesn’t need cell phone service to work. I still haven’t recieved any word on replacement/spare batteries though. Posted on the Pharos support forum but didn’t hear anything. I would like to purchase a spare battery.

It’s unlocked and should work on any GSM network. But does it exist? As of this morning my new ship date is Dec. 28 but now Dell has given me the option to cancel my order. If you need a phone by Christmas, may I suggest the HTC S621 that is not misrepresented and ships within 1 business day and there are plenty of user reviews online and with user videos on youtube. Ordered one Tuesday and recieved Friday. Price ranges from $289-315

Hi, all:

I’m little bit confused about the GPS functionality on Pharos 619 (or, any other smartphones claimed having GPS). Do I have to pay a monthly premium (say, $10/month) to my wireless provider (say, AT&T) to get this GPS functional ? Or, I don’t have to pay anything (just like those dedicated GPS devices, e.g., Garmin nuvi 250w) to use the GPS ????

Thanks !

SolSie

12/15
In case of Pharos, they included the GPS program and the maps, which should work as the stand-alone GPS you mentioned. You don’t have to pay to the carriers
MellFlores1

I have a contract with T-Mobile. If I were to use the GPS with this phone would it charge me as using data?

Dear james@pharosgps:

Any idea why this is taking sooo long. I just received an email from DELL. My order was suppose to be shipped on 12/16/08. They are now saying the order is delayed and will not be shipped until 12/24. This was suppose to be a chistmas gift. In your previous post you stated that you have shipped the phones to DELL…What gives? Is your company not supplying the phones to DELL. This is a bit ridiculous…

Dear nflores:

So sorry for the delay. We shipped the products early this week. It took much longer than we expected to get Microsoft certification for upgrading from Windows Mobile 6 to Windows Mobile 6.1. Please accept our apology. May I offer you free Smart Navigator with entire US maps on a 2 GB mini SD card ($99.95 value) or Spb Traveler 2 ($29.95 value) in appreciation of your patient? Please call 888-PHAROS-8, ask for Natalie and tell her James promised to send you either Smart Navigator or Traveler 2 for free.

T-Mobile has a $5.99 Internet Plan that I think is one the EDGE network. If I get this plan would I be able to use it one this phone or would I have to get one of the $30 data plans for Windows Mobile phones?
Foobar

12/21
If I’m not mistaken, the T-Mobile $5.99 Internet Plan (which was called t-zones) has been replaced by web2go, which starts at $9.99 per month for 50MB and 200 text messages. web2go should work with this phone – maybe someone can confirm this.
mellFlores1

12/21
Yeah I just checked on my phone. They must have changed it very recently. That kind of sucks because 5.99 was a very low price and I don’t think the was a limit.

KennyO December 25, 2008

Ok, my preliminary experience after one day of use: Appearance – The phone looks pretty good, feels good to the touch except it a bit on the large side but then again for the price it’s pretty good. Keyboard is very easy to use and the backlight feature helps a lot. Connectivity is fairly simple and sync is easy with direct pc link or Bluetooth connectivity.

Emails without a data plan will be transferred via direct link to pc. Wi-Fi enables you to view websites without a data plan as long as you can make connection. Site information is displayed cleanly and easy to see and read. Calendar and outlook info is transferred with ease.

Phone features are also easy to use but – when dialing a number that’s not on your contact list; you’ll have to switch to on screen keypad to dial the numbers. Not bad but I wish I could use the qwerty keyboard numbers just to dial these numbers, but then again, you may find that ok. I haven’t used GPS yet.

I think this is a good Smartphone for the money. No, it’s not 3G but it’s still acceptably fast. Besides the size and the battery life, I can’t find any faults or complaints about the product. Heck, I’m using the phone to post this comment. Overall, you will receive a fairly decent phone that will do everything you want it to do. Above all, James has provided excellent support to me and many others here so buy the phone and you won’t regret. Thanks James.

Devaraj Pr December 26, 2008

I wanted to know if the Pharos 619 requres additional software to use the GPS feature ?

I was not sure if this was the case.

Anthony Pansoy December 26, 2008

I received my Pharos 619 on 24 DEC 08.

GPS-

I only have GPSTest on my unit as well. GPS functionality is not very clear “out of the box”. Clicking on GPS Test wasn’t as amazing as I hoped it would be because well…nothing happened. I’ve had a Garmin 360 for close to two years now and was hoping for something not as great as the nuvi 360 but near to it.

Storage card? My 619 only came with a blank dust-blocker blank mini-SD card. No other GPS programs to be found after perusing the 619.

I was able to connect to WiFi for about an hour then it seems like AT&T could tell that I didn’t have a data plan and then shut me down. I HAVE the Media MAX 200 bundle and this is NOT a “data plan” in AT&T’s eyes so I lost the ability to surf online with the 619 after about an hour. I got a pop-up message suggesting I needed a data plan and that was pretty much the case. This to me is odd because I am using a WiFi access point that AT&T does NOT get paid for but can’t use the phone for internet use. To me this would be like Sony charging me extra to surf the Net on my PS3.

I like the fact that it comes bundled with Mobile 6.1 Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. I was a bit miffed that Outlook only comes as a 60-day trial. Why?

I, too, was a bit irked by the delay and considering the release of the iPhone at Wally World on the 28th I am kind of wondering if this was that great of a purchase for me.

Without a defined GPS program out of the box (I’m guessing I need third party software to get it working) and having to upgrade my phone service to surf the Net on WiFi AT&T doesn’t control this phone is basically a PDA to me. I have an old Palm Zire and some Axims that are gathering dust and can basically do the same thing.

I know that the Pharos 619 just came out. So far, I have refused to jump on the iPhone bandwagon and will give Pharos time to address several issues that I see on the horizon now that people are starting to get their phones from Dell.

David December 27, 2008

Received my 619 on Dec 24 as well. At first it was bigger than I expected but I liked using my Dell Axim 50 for E-Sword and other programs. The 619 gives me pretty much the same feel and size with the added benefit of a phone. I had purchased an Asus but when I saw the 619 coming out I sent it back and ordered the 619. So far so good except that it will only support a 2GIG Mini SD card, bummer. I really need something that will support larger capacity cards. However, Tech support informed me that there was no plan to improve on this problem. I am still having a hard time connecting to T-Mobile through my web package, although the auto config feature sets up the phone for your phone service provider. If anyone has any suggestions please help a brother out. I do love the ease of the toggle and one hand control. For the price, great deal.

Hiram December 29, 2008

Kevin December 31, 2008

I have had no difficulty connecting to the internet it fluctuates (via Wi Fi) too much. I used Command Prompt to see what was happening with the IP address activity and whenever it attempted to open a page, it was searching for the signal again. Also I am unable to configure my Network provider. I set it to T mobile but it keeps going back to AT&T. The Dell website said we would have a GPS and that was disappointing to find out that there was no application for the use of a GPS (though it readily detected numerous satellites but it did not correspond to any of them when I viewed the signal in depth). I certainly hope Pharos takes some action. Unfortunately all my computer enthusiastic friends told me, “You get what you pay for.” I certainly hope this is not true with this phone, though it is well below the price range of other smart phones, I would expect it to work with less hassles than this.

David December 31, 2008

Thanks Natalie, I was able to call T-Mobile and get the issue resolved. In the proxy settings it was as simple as changing the port for 80 to 8080 and then it worked. The only other issue I have is SD card size. I hope they do come up with a patch to overide the 2Gigs.

David December 31, 2008

To establish a web connection with T-Mobile do the following.

First open start then programs; select Auto Config then select USA_TMobile; click configure now; close application and select start then settings, then connections; manage existing connections (Connection should be named My Work Network) if not change from ISP to My Work Network: name of connection should be WAP and number should be wap.voicestream.com. Select edit then click on Proxy settings tab, check this network connects to the internet, check this network uses a proxy server; enter IP 216.155.165.50 in Proxy Server box. Select the advance button; tap on HTTP and change port from 80 to 8080; tap on WAP and change port to 9201; tap Socks and change port to 1080; click okay, okay again and close connections. You should be ready to roll. I hope this is helpful.

mellflores1 December 31, 2008

The Smart Navigator came in. It’s great. The only problem is that it takes a little longer than say, a Garmin, to acquire a signal.

Anthony December 31, 2008

Smart Navigator?

Is this a free program?

I have GPS Test on my Pharos it it seems to lock on to a couple of satellites but there is NO application to use the GPS on my Pharos 619.

I received my 619 on Dec. 23 and was disappointed to find no navigational software installed. I’ve tried e-mailing Pharos twice with no response and spent several minutes on hold and left a number to be called with no response. How do you get in touch with Natalie or James to get this software?

Hi Jane, I am sure James or Natalie will get back with you shortly. They are monitoring this discussion threat. I was hoping to get a review unit to help you guys out, but so far have not received any feed back from Pharos.
From the description at Pharos (for a similar product Traveler 127)

“The unit comes with Pharos’ proprietary Smart Navigator software and server-based travel information and navigation service. Additionally, the device is pre-loaded with Microsoft Live Search, providing free information about traffic, gas prices, movie times and weather.”

I guess, the 619 is packaged by Dell, the software should be buried somewhere.

I have purchased this Pharos 619 and waiting to get it. Not sure if this device comes with any navigator software.
I previous owned Mio P550 which is PDA+GPS. It had Mio’s GPS software and it worked like a charm.
I had Google maps working like a charm. Only thing is it we have to set ‘Use GPS’. For the maps to show-up clearly, you need data which you can get via wi-fi and you are done. when you drive, the dot moves across with you and shows exactly where you are. But the screen/map does not move with it, so you have to scroll the screen when dot goes out.
I was not able to start ‘live search’ so not sure how it works.

Hi, everyone:

Finally I got my 619. Does anyone have the issues like me?

A).I can connect 619 to my Router, on 619 showing Wi-Fi: my router name and I double-check Wireless Manager showing my router name connected.
But, why can’t I connect to the internet. I run the Internet Explorer and go to Pharosgps.com and showing “The page cannot be found. Check the name and try again.” Same as other sites. Where do I need to modify / configure?

B).BTW, I don’t have SIM card so far, does it cause the problem?

C).Can I use Skype Mobile + Wi-Fi to call to save phone bill? How?

I need your help to solve my internet issue that I can continue to use and testing.

Thanks for the help.

YKang January 5, 2009

Received my 619 three days ago. I am pretty satisfied with it so far. The features I tried as below:

1. The phone feature is working ok with t-mobile pre-paid. It takes time for me to get used to the phone keypad.

2. Wifi connection works like a charm.

3. To answer willy, I installed Skype on 619 and called my friends using skype. One guy told me the skype quality actually is better than regular GSM call quality. It is amazing. BTW, I have to install skype for pocketpc version instead of smartphone version to get skype working on 619. It is odd anyway.

4. Regarding GPS feature, I have no success with the GPETest program built in the ROM. But the mini GPS viewer software I installed is working fine. It detected 9+ satellite. The port is comm port 5, baud rate 9600.

You can download mini GPS viwer here: (PocketPC version)

http://www.holux.com/JCore/en/support/DLF.jsp?DLU=http://www.holux.com/JCore/UploadFile/2524986.rar

5. I don’t have any mini SD card. Can anybody confirm 619 support 4GB+ SDHC card or not? I did read some article saying there is a SDHC driver for OMAP 850. But no sure SDHC is working out of box or not.

Natalie@PharosGPS January 6, 2009

Dear KennyO,
We sent an email which will provide you with the registration key for the Smart Navigator program.

Thank you.

MasterMind January 6, 2009

Hi Natalie/James,
I have purchased this device for purely GPS and PDA purposes with added phone features which I am not going to use currently. Hopefuly it should work without SIM card.

If the device does not come with GPS software, there is no point in spending 100s of more dollars for the software.

“Google Maps” and “Live search” does not give voice guided directions and both the softwares need wi-fi which is horrible most of the time when you are lost on the roads. It can give your current location but whats the use when you can’t see the clear map and cannot get directions without wi-fi or data plan.

This device is new in the market? With lower miniSD capabilities of 2GB. I have purchased 16GB card and for this device I may need to buy another lower end to work with this?
Adding to this, I do not know how the Pharos products are.

Can someone in customer support or any current customer can test higher end minSD card (4, 8 or 16 GB) on this if it works. May be we can only get 2GB usable, I may keep the product.

I am in to return this product as this will not be usable out of the box. I am waiting to receive the product and then will opt-in to return.

willy January 7, 2009

1).Thanks YKang and support from Pharos. Finally, I can get on the internet.

2).I found the 619 doesn’t have enough SPACE to hold some more extra software and utilities I like. Since, they are requiring the installation must stay at the DEVICE, not the Storage Card.
Too bad :(

3).To YKang, my Skype doesn’t have better sound quality. I’m not sure where’s the problem? Do you use it a lot and get the same better quality?

4).anyone used Smart Navigator and any comments?

KennyO January 8, 2009

GPS function with smart navigator still requires internet connection before it guides you.

Natalie@PharosGPS January 8, 2009

Dear KennyO,

The Smart Navigator program doesnt require for you to have a valid internet connection in order for it to work. All of the US maps are on a 2GB mini SD card which are opened once you acquire a GPS signal. If you are looking to use added features such as: GPS auto update, Smart Finder or Smart Traffic, and SW update; then you will need to have a valid internet connection. However, you do not require one if you are only looking to travel from Point A to Point B. If you are experience problems please give me a call at 888-742-7678 (Ask for Natalie).

Thank you,
Natalie

PAULCHAN January 8, 2009

IS ANY ONE KNOW HOW TO INSTALL SMART NAVIGTOR ON 619 SMART PHONE. IF I USE THE SMART NAVIGATOR ON MY 619 FOR GPS. IS THAT MEANS I CANNOT USE ANOTHER MINI SD CARD FOR STORAGE. PLS HELP

Natalie @ Pharos January 9, 2009

Dear PAULCHAN ,
The Pharos Traveler 619 does not include the Smart Navigator program. However, it does include the Microsoft Live Search program which will provide you with it driving directions, GPS guidance (no voice prompts), real-time traffic, gas price, weather, movie, and local business information (free).

The Smart Navigator program comes on a 2GB mini SD card which contains maps for the US and Canada. If you wish to use another mini SD card for personal documents, then you might need to switch out between the two mini SD cards. Or you could also make a back up of the SD card on your computer and delete the maps that you do not need.

Thank you,
Natalie

Natalie @ Pharos January 9, 2009

Dear MasterMind,
Please kindly send me an email to support@pharosgps.com (Attn Natalie) with your contact information. Once received I will contact you regarding the Smart Navigator program.

Thank you,
Natalie

PaulChan, Just like all Windows Mobile device, You have to connect to your PC via ActiveSync or Device Manager to install from your PC: Read more here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/default.mspx

Natalie @ Pharos January 9, 2009

Dear PAULCHAN ,

Here are the instructions which will help you install the Smart Navigator program on the Pharos Traveler 619. Tap on the Start Menu – Programs – File Explorer – look at the very top of the screen where it says File Explorer and directly below this there will be another name of a folder. This is different on each PDA but whatever the name is, click on it and change it to My Device -> SDMMC- locate the (Smart Navigator) file and tap on it. It will then run the setup process and install onto your phone.

Thank you,
Natalie

The speaker phone conversation on Pharos 619 is not audible. It so distorted and I need to switch back to normal mode to hear anything. Is there a way to fix this, or that is what I am stuck with?

james@pharos January 10, 2009

Dear pjr:

Could you please try to lower the volume when using the speaker?

Steve B January 11, 2009

I wanted to add my comments about the 619, I received mine a couple of days ago. I’m happy with the phone, it seems to work fine. Paired up with my Jabra headset no problem. The Wifi setup was easy. All the phone controls work as I would expect a windows mobile phone to work. The size is large, but thats not an issue as I will usually be leaving the phone in my shirt pocket unless I use the PDA / GPS, I’ll answer the phone with my headset. The square format takes a little getting used to, but having both touchscreen and a keyboard is a real treat.
I do have to say, it wasn’t until after I ordered my phone I found this forum and found out no GPS software was included, Dell’s website doesn’t say software is required nor does the phone’s box mention additional software is required to use the Built in GPS, I feel this was misleading (maybe not intentional but still something that should be made clear). I would feel better about this purchase if I could please have a copy of the software as well.
Thanks
Steve

pjr January 11, 2009

James, I did try lowering the volume. I was able hear the music ok. But phone conversation is the issue.

PAULCHAN January 11, 2009

DEAR STEVE B

YES, YOU ARE RIGHT. THEY SHOULD MENTION FOR THE GPS-LIVE SEARCH MUST BE FREE WIFI OTHERWISE, IT CAN NOT WORK. ACTUALLY, IT THE GPS MUST NEED FREE WIFI, I THINK NO ONE WILL BUY IT

I just got my 619 and the first screen i get is to enter a password, i dont see any password in the manual. Can anyone help me. I cant get out of that screen even if i reset it.

pjr January 11, 2009

Can pharo’s issue a software patch to support more than 2GB memory cards? Is it a possibility?

Natalie@Pharos January 13, 2009

Dear PJR,
Was the phone signal low when this problem occured? How many bars did you have at the time? Who is your phone provider?

Thank you,
Natalie

Natalie@Pharos January 13, 2009

Dear Hiram,
I apologize for any inconvenience that this might have caused you. I would suggest for you to carry out a factory reset (cold boot) to remove the password. To do this: Hold down Fn + Soft 2 key for 5 seconds (Splash screen stays on for 25 seconds from switch on). The screen will go blank after 6 seconds. The factory reset may take up to 1 minute.

Please feel free to contact me in case you continue to have problems. Kindly send me an email to support@pharosgps.com (Attn Natalie).

Thank you,
Natalie

battery life

is anyone can give me the comment for the battery life. Personally, I feel the battery life is not good as they said.

thanks & regards
Paul

Steve B January 13, 2009

Hi Paul

I’ve been getting about 8 hours of battery time with my normal usage which is 2 or 3 phone calls, 15 minutes of Wifi surfing, bluetooth on and fiddling with the GPS test software 20 or 30 minutes. I’ve owned three HTC pda phones and I think the time is about average. It all depends what features you are using and what’s turned on, I gave up using my old phone as a MP3 player because it used up alot of battery time.
Personally after spending between 5 and 6 hundred dollars each on my old HTC pda phones only to have them dropped, smashed in a car door or broken in two with a wood splitter I can live with the faults this phone comes with, I need Excel and Word for work and would very much like to carry one device instead of several. For a sub 200 dollar phone that might last me 2 years tops, I’m all for it. I talked with Pharos this morning and Angela said she would send me a copy of their GPS software when they receive their order of SD cards. When they come thru on their promise I will be a very happy owner, in the meantime I’ll be a happy owner

Hopes this is helpful

Steve

pjr January 14, 2009

Natalie,

Signal is good(3-4 bars). If I talk without speaker phone..its fine. But with speaker phone its a problem. Service is t-mobile.

Thanks
janaki.

fredc January 17, 2009

I also have a problem with a bad sounding speakerphone – crackling and distortion. I tried lowering the volume and it helped a bit, but volume is very low. I contacted Pharos support(they have excellent service) and they sent me a new phone. Unfortunately, it has the same problem so I’m sending back the replacement. Seems the speakerphone has some sort of problem on this model – no matter where you set the volume, when the call first starts the volume is maxed and is too much for the speaker. I also have T-Mobile.

pjr January 18, 2009

thanks for the info fredc. Well this doesn’t sound good . This sounds like a model problem. . I was kind of getting used to the fact that, I can’t use the phone as gps without significant additional costs, now speaker phone issue. Hopefully there is a resolution for this problem. Note: If there are enough cases with this problem, probably pharos will have incentive in finding a fix.

fredc January 20, 2009

Yeah, the speakerphone is disappointing – but this phone has so many other great features for the price that make it worth having. The next closest phone with these features would cost over 300 dollars, so it really is worth it as an entry level phone.

fredc January 20, 2009

I’d like to point out a few things for anyone considering this phone:

Good:
1. Has Windows Mobile 6.1 – latest version.
2. The display is crisp and bright.
3. Has alot of features for the money.
4. Stable – rarely crashes. I haven’t needed to do a hard reset yet.

Bad:
1. Screen is locked in landscape mode and cannot be rotated. Alot of software will not run correctly because of this.
2. GPS can usually only be used outdoors – but this is probably true of any internal GPS without some kind of booster.
3. The aforementioned speakerphone problems – this is also true of alot of low cost phones.

Paolo Cusinu January 21, 2009

Hi,
my pharos 619 gps works inside as well.

I have tried several times and I was experiencing the same issues above. I tried several times and nothing…

Eventually, the thing worked out of the box, even with the gps test software, when plugged in the power supply… I think I’ll get a car power supply to use it when driving, this is similar to any GPS in the market…

Another advice is to activate the gps for long time, which means turn it on before you really need it. It seems to work better when it has been in use for some time.

I am in Sardinia and usually I see 12 satellites in view but I am not able to lock on any of them. Now, I have been able to lock 4 of them, let say 1 after the first 3 minutes of operation and so on every 3 minutes.

I guess after 10 minutes it is showing an “outstanding” latit+long position… (please consider that the gps should be used outside so I am sure it performs better than this…)

Enjoy and CIAO.

KENNY LAI January 21, 2009

HI NATALIE

RE:battery has a drainage problem

AFTER FULL CHARGE TO 100% BATTERY
1. 10 MINUTES FOR WIFI
2. BLUE TOOTH FOR 11 HOURS
3. TALKING ON THE PHONE FOR 70 MINUTES
4. GPS FOR 5 MINUTES

THEN THE BATTERY DROP TO 20% AND ASK ME TO CHARGE THE BATTERY

I THINK IT IS VERY NO GOOD. PLS COMMENT

I KNOW AS THAT PRICE I CANNOT BUY THE SAME PHONE WITH THE SAME FUNCTION, HOWEVER, IF I KNOW THE BATTERY IS LIKE THIS. I PREFER TO SPEND MORE MONEY TO BUY THE BETTER PHONE WITH BETTER BATTERY LIFE. I AM A SALESREP I ALWAYS OUTSIDE. THE BATTERY LIFE IS THE BIG ISSUE FOR ME. PLS HELP

james@pharos January 21, 2009

Hi Kenny:

There is no reason that we should ever give you an unsatisfactory product. Let me ask our customer support to send you a replacement battery. We would appreciate if you could send your battery back to us so that we can investigate why it has such a short life.

james@pharos January 21, 2009

We are investigating speakerphone’s problem. We will post a solution once we have it.

Paolo Cusinu January 21, 2009

Hi again,
well as I expected on open sky or in the car the device works greatly. Even when I am driving in the traffic.

It seems even better when I turn off the connections I do not need: the bluetooth, the wifi and sometimes also the phone. This way the battery is all for the gps device…

Yet to spare battery when I use the gps I just kill every otger appication of the phone, MS d*a*m*n*-office, etc…

Still need a software to use… no microsoft live search available on the phone, as every body else here… I tried some of third party software for free for a couple of days and I am choosing one of them…

Just a last note, sometimes the program device.exe crashes… STILL SAME MICROSOFT JUNK… after a couple of soft resets everything comes back in order…

I am happy…

james@pharos January 21, 2009

The Live Search included in 619 was a general version. We will have the specific version preloaded in our shipment. For the time being please kindly take the trouble to download Live Search (Thanks for Microsoft’s support) by
- go to Today screen (main screen)
- click on Live Search
- IE windows will pop up
- you will see Live Search page
- click “Download interactive maps” for Windows Mobile
- click “Download” Live Search now.
- check “Open file after download”when you see a Download windows pops up
- click “Yes”
It takes one minute or less to download the Live Search over GPRS. Once the download complete, the Live Search will be automatically installed. Once you have the Live Search installed, you can enjoy live traffic, gas price, weather, movie information free. You can also search local business, view maps (regular or satellite images), get turn-by-turn directions, and activate GPS guidance (no voice prompts). Again all of these are free.

However, please give us a call (888-PHAROS-8) if you encounter any problem of downloading the Live Search.

james@pharos January 21, 2009

Sorry, in my previous message, I meant “we will have Windows Mobile specific version of Live Search preloaded on 619 in our next shipment”.

seshendra January 21, 2009

I’ve been trying to get couple of issues fixed with pharos support before I stumbled across this forum. I have the exact same issue with the speaker phone as couple of others experienced, It is very distorted and also I have another strange issue, when the WIFi on the phone is ON, the person on the other side of the call cannot hear my voice clearly (voice is distorted) but surprisingly when I turn the WiFi OFF, the voice is normal). I’ve been exchanging mails with pharos support for over a week now and they are yet to provide a solution for the same. Do any of you guys have the issue with the WIFI? and also the available program memory after the initial boot is only around 20MB, but I believe the phone has 64M of RAM, is it possible to free up some RAM for additional programs?

Steve B January 21, 2009

seshendra I think I can help you with the Voice quality with WIFI on, This is the first pda/phone I’ve owned that runs win mobile 6 my older HTC phones used pocket pc 2001 and 2003. A one of the differences in the versions is there is no “memory clear” feature I’ve found in winmobile 6, I believe MS replaced it with “Task Manager” However task manager doesn’t seem to release memory the same way and what I’ve found is each time I use a program, word, excel, the calculator, the phone, gps… etc etc. When you close the program, not all the memory is returned to use, so after a while you no longer have enough memory for digitizing voices to make a call. What I’ve been doing is a nightly reset, you don’t loose anything but it clears the system memory and effectively returns the maximum program memory. This has addressed every issue I’ve had with the phone so far, it might even help with the speakerphone. I’d suggest the next time you have this issue, try using the tip of your stylus to do a rest on the bottom right side of your phone. I hope this is helpful

Hi,

Is the pharos 619, comes ONLY with the English language?

Thanks

james@pharos January 23, 2009

Yes, Pharos Traveler 619 comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 English version.

Mo January 24, 2009

Can we install french windows 6.1? beacause I ordrer one 619 from DELL Canada and I want it in french.

Thank you

Primus January 25, 2009

I was looking forward to using my Pharos 619 after receiving it last week, but became disappointed for the following reasons:

1. No GPS software or miniSD cards, just the bare-bones GPS Test program. After reading through these comments, it became apparent that LiveSearch is available for download, but that’s far from a dedicated application!

2. No support for miniSD above 2gb. I had paid for a 4gb card which I now can’t use.

3. Battery – it drops to 72% after 6 hours of bluetooth, no wifi and no phone usage. More troublingly, even when it’s plugged into my PC, it stops charging once the battery reaches 100%, even as the phone continues to be used.

4. Speakerphone is barely audible – which I gather is a pervasive issue on this forum.

Should I return this phone? Right now it doesn’t work as a GPS unit, the speakerphone can’t match a $20 cell phone, and the battery drain is horrendous. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

pjr January 25, 2009

Primus.. yes battery life is poor. I am hoping that there is a firmware upgrade that can support more than 2GB cards. Speaker phone is real bummer for me, well it looks like I am stuck with it :)

Last time I checked, dell charges 15% restocking fee for this phone if its not defective. So good luck.

pjr January 27, 2009

What is the optimal amount of built in memory I need to keep free for 619 to operate efficiently. I observed that if the builtin memory getter lower than 8mb, the device is having issues like soft keys not working etc, I have to soft reset the device to make it work.

pjr

YKang January 28, 2009

To Primus and pjr who is looking for the SDHC driver for our Pharos 619 device. I finally found a working one. I googled a couple only this one works but it is more than enough.

I tested it with a 4GB Kingston MicroSDHC card. It is working like a charm. It is hard to find a MiniSDHC card on the market so I ended up buying a MicroSDHC card with Mini and Standard SD adapters. The exact model is

Kingston microSDHC Class 4 High Capacity Micro Secure Digital Card with 2 Adapters (SDC4/4GB-2ADP)

http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-microSDHC-Capacity-SDC4-4GB-2ADP/dp/B000VX4W78/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1233165617&sr=8-5

or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134528

I don’t know exactly where this driver is coming from so take your own risk. At least it works fine with my Pharos 619. Be aware that I only have Kingston 4GB SDHC card tested, not sure it works with any other brands or not. Please try it with your SDHC cards and report the compatibility list.

You can download the driver sdhc-pharos-619.cab here:

YKang January 29, 2009

Hi pjr, I don’t have the problem. I can access the SD card from my host PC via ActiveSync. I have no problem accessing the card after disconnecting from ActiveSync. The driver is coming from HTC so it should be ok to use it. What’s the brand/model of your SDHC card?

I bought a non sdhc 4 gig mini sd card thru ebay for my HP 6915. I have been using it with my 619 with n problems and no drivers. I also bought Garmin Mobile® XT – for Windows Mobile PDA Cell Phone thru ebay for 28 dollars plus shiping and a micro to mini adaptor and it works great…My external 54 channel bluetooth gps finds the satilites faster than internal but both work great. Found that you need to configure external gps utility to get applications to work correctly. Right now have it wrking with google maps, google navigator, and garmin xt. Overall I like the phone, can not beat the price with features. Although the battery does not last as long as a regular phone it is a lot better that the T-mobile os2 or HP 6915. The only real complaint is that they started selling the phone with no accessories available. I’m using a Dc to Ac converter to power it in my car to use the gps on long trips.

pjr

Thanks for your asking. In fact, our engineers and QA/QC just released a new OS. We will post it on our web site for 619 users to download. The new OS fixed WiFi problem, improved the speakerphone’s audio quality, and included Live Search.
Hope you will like the new OS.
Sincerely,

Does the Operating system update act as a a cold reset? Which means we will have to go to the manufactures to reload software that is copy protected to re-register. Time consuming, as IT person should have stayed away from a new release. We still have not adopted Vista… :)

Hi James,

I tried flashing the ROM but was unable to do so. I followed all the 3 steps. Following are the messages I see:

WARNING: You are attempting to install an image onto a different model.
Please check you have the correct ROM image for this.

WARNING: This device has a newer version of software. You are downgrading

Your device is now ready to be upgraded to version .

Please note that the procedure might take up to 20 minutes during which your

but after only few secs it says that the upload is successful and device is rebooting. I checked the firmware version and it still shows 1.1.5.9. Something seems to be wrong. I’d appreciate any help in this regard.

Thanks

pjr February 10, 2009

Hi James,

Its showing same message as seshendra pasted above for me too. I cancelled the upgrade at that point instead for proceeding further, the program crashed. Please confirm that the version uploaded is the correct one

pjr

pjr February 11, 2009

Anyway… I did the upgrade.. it seems its not upgrading the software. It is just hard resetting the device. I don’t see live search installed automatically. Still version shows 1.1.5.9. Now I have to go thru my device setup for nothing :( . Please give us the correct binary to download.

Note: On the PC when updating the progress bar stays at 0% (If it helps you debug the issue)

seshendra February 11, 2009

I faced the same issue that pjr mentioned above. The progress bar on both PC and the phone showed 0% before the phone was hard reset automatically. I lost all my installed programs for nothing :(

Natalie @ Pharos February 11, 2009

Hello PJR & Seshendra:

I apologize for all of the problems that you are experiencing with this upgrade. May I ask, which file did you download from our website? Did you select the following file : M619_G4_0409_1.1.5.17_20090210_XP.exe ?

Please send me an email to support@pharosgps.com (Attn Natalie) and provide me with your contact phone number. I will be more than glad to walk you through the OS upgrade.

Thank you.

gduer February 11, 2009

Hi gduer,

What is the “lock” you are talking about. Can you please let me know the steps to shut it OFF?

thanks

seshendra February 11, 2009

Hi Natalie,
Following is the file I downloaded from your website:
M619_G4_0409_1.1.5.17_20090210_XP.exe
I’m using winXP and activeSync 4.5. I’ll send you an email with my ph#.

thanks

jmgallego February 11, 2009

Natalie and James.

First of all, THANKS! for having this forum to talk about the M619. Reading the posts, both of you give such a personal attention to your customers… I really appreciate it… thanks…

Just one question, will the M619 ever be capable of reading the miniSD HC without having to install the HTC driver?

I installed an 8G Patriot Mem micro SDHC (Class 4) with an miniSD adapter (by the way, Patriot Memory has a terrible RMA service, go with Kingston parts). Unfortunately, this driver only “sees” 3.5G.

Other than missing the other 4.5G, it has been working fine.

Although I have not put the M619 to full test, I am concern about the battery life as commented here (and other places). Can you please tell me where I can purchase an additional battery? Will there be a higher capacity version (higher than 1660mAh)?

Thanks

jmgallego February 11, 2009

Just an update.

I did the upgrade to 1.1.15 build 17 however, the speakerphone still is crackling and the sound still distorted (not as much as before) but the volume still is very, very low. And, just in case you ask, yes, the volume is set it on the volume scale to the second line from the top and my hearing is very good, ;^)

gduer February 12, 2009

The lockm is reached by going to start/setting/lock and uncheck prompt is device is unused for

Hope this helps

seshendra February 12, 2009

I was able to finally do the update. Looks like the “M619_G4_0409_1.1.5.17_20090210_XP” I downloaded on 02/10 was the culprit. I downloaded a new one yesterday and it worked like a charm. The update did not fix the speaker problem entirely, speaker sounds a little better than the previous version but it is still distorted (crackling noise).

johnny February 18, 2009

Hi,

I don’t see the OS upgrade on the Pharos site (was it pulled?)All I see is the “WiFi Audio Patch for Traveler 619″. I would like the new OS if it is available.

For those who did the upgrade, was this an OS upgrade from Windows Mobile 6.1 to Windows Mobile 6.5?

jmgallego February 19, 2009

It is (was?) 6.1. 6.5 has not been officially released by MS.

mellflores1 February 22, 2009

Speaking of WM 6.5…Pharos, any plans for a 6.5 update for the Traveler 619?

pjr March 4, 2009

Can anybody refer me to a free mediaplayer that can play mp4 videos on 619?

niwre March 7, 2009

i got my m619 yesterday, the m619 its a little bulky and heavy. about the system software it’s a little bit unstable maybe due to lack of memory built in to the device. the system froze specially when using the live search and turning the gps. always do the soft reset to resolve. lacks standalone gps software i can use there are place have no phone signal, windows live search can be used only when you have a data plan or wifi available to access the map without it nothing can be seen(how about the prepaid end users?). overall i’m not satisfied with the phone spending almost $200 and if you add up their smart navigator software $100 and 2gb sd card $30= $330 which i can buy much better phone, better specs and applications. if i only knew that there was no standalone navigation software then i would not have bought this phone.

Jayson March 8, 2009

Hello everyone. I have had my phone for a couple of months now, for the most part I have really enjoyed it. I have had a really difficult time setting up my data package. I have Tmobile and they were no help. if anyone needs it wap.voicestream.com is what needs to be entered under the gprs connection. there is no user/password/domain. I had to search through quite a few forums for that.

my complaints on the phone are;
1. speaker is terrible
2. battery lasts maybe 4 hours
and has been that way since i bought it
3. The gps is is not user friendly. I cant get it to work. I am using windows live, but cant get a position.

Gordon Duer March 9, 2009

Jason have you configured the GPS?
Go to Start/settings/External GPS.

It took me a while to find that. With WM 6.1 it takes the internat GPS and gives it a plug and play type were as the internal is comm 5 9600baud wm61 can be set up to say it is on comm1 or zero etc..

Hope that helps

niwre March 9, 2009

on the third day of using my new M619 the touch screen was not functioning. Tried soft reset and hard reset still problem occurs. Really dissapointed with the product and I returned it to Dell with full refund.

David March 9, 2009

I have had my 619 for about 3 months now. I like it despite the size but I can get by with it. It has performed pretty good except for the reboots (3 maybe four times a week)Live search works good but still unable to locate my position with the GPS, not the main reason I purchased it anyway. I like to use 3rd party applications, in particular, Pocket E-Sword with commentaries and dictionaries. I also put the spb shell GUI interface on it and it runs great. It is the same interface on the Pharos 127. Btw, I was looking at maybe upgrading to the 127 but the screen is smaller, although I like the onboard memory. Does anyone know if the 127 will hold anything larger than a 2g mini card? I also tried the patch to increase memory to a 4g mini card but kept having issues and crashes, so I took it off. Overall I really like but not in love with my 619.

David March 9, 2009

One more thing, to connect to the internet using T-Mobile WAP, use these settings:

I hope this is helpful.

jmgallego March 10, 2009

David,

Thanks for the WAP settings, but for some it aint’t working for me.

I am getting the “HTTP Error: $CODE$”. I know I am missing something but I cannot figure out what. I am enrolled in the $5.99 service.

Any help to solve this will be greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

David March 11, 2009

jmgallego,

I have the $5.99 web service as well. Make sure you don’t have any settings set up under ISP it seems the device defaults to ISP settings first. If that is not the case just double check your settings for missing dots, spaces or mispelled words. It is usually something simple. I know getting connected is not the most important thing in the world but when you get that close to figuring it out obession takes over. lol

jmgallego March 12, 2009

David,

I just have to laugh about this one… you are absolutely correct… it was the 165 reversed with the 155… (blushing). :^(

David March 12, 2009

jmgallego, that is funny but it has happen to me all too many times. :)

btw, I saw you on another forum, I downloaded a driver for SDHC above 2g (not mentioned on this one) Have you tried using this driver? If so how is it working. I tried the one mentioned here and I had too many problems and had to remove it. I really want to expand my memory card, that would determine if I decide to keep it or sell it. My Blackberry Curve can hold more memory than the 619.

jmgallego March 12, 2009

Hehehe… I really was not expecting that it was an ID-10T error :^( I started to think that T-Mobile had pulled the plug on my cheap data service!

Yes, I also had to remove the driver(s) today. Actually I tested two, the one mentioned here, the sdhc-pharos-619.cab, and the SDHC_v071227.cab (mentioned at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?s=e2ee346875c1225dfc5aa12c0a63182e&t=483527) including adding the jasjamming’s registry patch. The bottom line for me is that sometimes it read the complete 8gigs, sometimes only 3.5gigs… then there is the need to pull it out and put it back in order to re-access it, which has become annoying, it was just inconvenient, now is frustrating since it stops accessing the card and everything is paused until one remembers to pull it out and put it back in.

Not worth the frustration, I should update my statement on the other site :^(

I am pleased with M619, but I would also like to be able to have more memory.

Anyone else had a better experience to share?

pjr March 19, 2009

Also, does it do voice-activated dialing?

I recently bought the traveler m619 and after just one week when I turn it on it freezes at the opening. I cant turn it off. I tried to reset it by holding down the reset button for a few seconds and nothing has changed. I removed the battery and still the same thing. Not sure what else to do

Hi

I recently bought a m619 from dell canada, and received it. I am very disappointed that this does not come with any GPS software. Why is dell advertising it as a GPS phone if I can’t use it as a GPS? I searched online afterwards to find this page.

I think pharos should contact dell to make it clear in the product headline that it’s GPS-Capable, and not necessarily a GPS phone.

I do not have GPRS or Data services and I was really looking forward to having a GPS phone combination.

This is really disappointing.

HP May 19, 2009

Hello,
Purchased this phone. Good features for a price.
Speaker phone is a bad quality. I also tried music but still no good. Attached speakers and they had a better quality. Means, the phone has good output but speakerphone is not good.
GPS is useless without a software. The GPSTest is of no use as most of the times it does not work. I got MioMap v3 for PDA and it works perfect.

It is nice to have fix/driver so that the phone can recognize more than 2GB.

I have T-Mobile prepaid. I cannot get into the internet. Does anyone have settings so that I can use internet?

Does anyone use the bluetooth to send music to a stereo device for replay – through a car stereo for example, like the motorola t505 or t305?

Anybody upgraded to latest OS patch on pharos website? It feels a lot stable and lot of apps works without much issues. Probably because it downgraded the os from 6 to 5.2.
On another note, I paid for Win mobile 6 and got 5.2 as a fix for issues :)

I have been looking at this phone for a while. I plan to buy an unlocked GSM phone and use it with AT&T’s prepaid go phone service. Is it possible? I looked at att’s list of supported phones, and pharos wasn’t even listed (neither was dell). Please help me! :)

pjr July 10, 2009

Hi Patrick, if you looking for GPS phone, unless you spend extra $100 for software, its no use. So you can take that feature off. This phone is good for
1. Making calls with either headset or traditional way (phone to the ear). Speaker phone is not usable.
2. Thirdparty software can make this phone better, but anything that makes this phone better is more than $20 a piece
3. You need to charge battery every night.
4. Phone feels big and heavy and everybody will ask you what phone is it :)

Patrick July 11, 2009

Ok PJR, I just wanted to know if an at&t gophone SIM card would work in it. I don’t plan to use the GPS at all. I only want to make voice calls, and occasionally text message/SMS. Will At&T allow me to do that?

pjr July 11, 2009

Regular ATT service should work..not sure about go phone sim( if the sim is already in use it probably should work). This phone is unlocked phone, so ideally it should work any working SIM as long as the service falls into the supported frequencies for this phone. I don’t use ATT service, so can’t give you 100% yes.

Hi KP:

Some prepaid SIM cards are specially designed for their associated prepaid phones and might not work with other phones. We have not tested Net10 SIM yet but we knew Tracfone’s SIM only works with Tracfone.

I have had my phone for 2 days now and boy does the battery life suck. Having to charge it nightly is a little bit of a pain but I think I can get used to it. all in all I do like this phone, does everything that I need, I do have a question though, does anyone else have a problem with a recesed power button? I have to press it with my finger nail to get it as it is so far inside the phone. Is this normal or did I get a faulty phone?

If anyone is interested in a prepaid plan in the us for a 619 then T-mobile sim card and prepaid plan works very well and was no problem for set-up.. Buy the 100 dollar refill card. Its only 10 cents per minute that way.. Calling mart was cheaper than anyone else I could find..

Hi,

i have a traveler 619 that was givin to me as a christmas present by my Aunt. Just the other day my phone stopped booting up. the red led comes on when i pug in the charger and i am able to attempt a hard reset but it gets stuck on the blue pharos screen. I talked to the Cust Serv. Rep. and she said send it in witrh the origianl receipt. Taht would be no problem only thing is she did not give me a receipt and passed away in late feburary in a vehicle accident. I have no paperwork on the phone nor do i know who or where she purchased it from. It is a Pharos phone i don’t see why they can’t just take it back and repair it. it is obviously a software issue. I know how to erase and re-install OS on phone but i can’t even get this one to fully bot up to do that.

Hello,
I am using this device since it was released, but was using it as a GPS and sometimes wi-fi.
But now I have started with T-mobile voice service and no data in the plan. With wi-fi, it connects to my wireless router but cannot get through the internet. When I try using browser, it goes through 3G and cannot get to internet. Even outlook for my hotmail goes through 3G and gets blocked.
Question is how do I make wi-fi as default and if no wi-fi use 3g.
Secondly, I saw few files in the file explorer in “My Device” they are taking lots of system memory and I cannot delete them or move them. Here are the list of file and I need help in move them to my miniSD card and make that path as default.
1)cemail
2) mxip_lang
3) mxip_notify
4) mxip_swmgmt
5) mxip_system
6) pim

Appreciate yuo time and help.
