Installing Windows 7 using a USB Thumb Drive
Windows 7 beta has been available for download and critics seem to be unanimously positive so far. The download is an ISO format ready to burn to a DVD and this should not be an issue to install for a test drive on your PC or a virtual machine.
Windows 7 is also ideal to run on a netbook with 1 or 2 GB of RAM. The problem is the Netbooks do not have a DVD drive to boot from. Therefore, USB stick is the convient way. The below video produced by MS Technet Singapore, D. Chung shows step-by-step how to prepare the USB stick for the install.
The steps for preparing the USB Disk.
1. Diskpart
2. List Disk
3. Select Disk 1 (Replace 1 with number reflecting your USB Drive)
4. clean
5. create partition primary
6. active
7. format fs=fat32 quick
8. assign
Now, a drive letter reflecting the drive should appear. Copy the bits from the DVD to the USB Stick.
