Additional insights from Palm & Sprint about the Pre
My friend Vince Nguyen from SlashGear / PreCommunity posted his interview with both Palm and Sprint execs about the most anticipated Smartphone for 2009, the Palm Pre. In the interview, we learn few interesting things including the incremental upgrade of the firmware will be pushed over the air as opposed to full ROM flash. On the Pre, data connection will be constantly open in the background, perhaps for application such Exchange direct push and that could be the reason that Sprint will strongly push for their all-you-can-eat plan. Apps can stay open in multitasking fashion, for instance music can run on the background while user surf the Web, editing documents, etc..until the memory is exhausted then selective shutdown might occur to ensure user seamless experience.
Vince could not get Palm confirm if Flash support is available on the Pre Web browser. WebOS will allow caching pertinent information a la Google Gmail for offline use when the data connection is not available nor optimal. According to Sprint, their exec claims the total cost of ownership of the Pre will be significantly smaller than that of rival devices: they suggested in excess of $1,000 less than the iPhone 3G.
