Granted Microsoft had a head start with its PocketPC Windows Mobile OS but the lack of innovation and delay in execution have put it in the back seat.   According to Screen Digest research, Nokia, Google, Research In Motion (RIM) and Apple pose potent challenges to Microsoft’s mobile ambitions.

In 2008, global Windows Mobile handsets shipments dropped 11% to 18 million units, while Blackberry sales doubled to 22.5 million and Apple sold over 13 million iPhones in its first full year of commercialization.

While Microsoft still pursuits its strategy of making the OS available at a fee to various hardware vendors (in contrast to Google offering free OS licenses and both RIM & Apple controlling their own hardware), it will announce a number of initiatives at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The initiatives covers synchronization and backup services, application and media store, but the real big mobile platform push will be the new Windows Mobile 7, expected in 2010.

But with this long delay, more worthy players will show up such the new Palm Pre running WebOS along with relentless innovative solution Apple and R.I.M.. Microsoft must have a very challenging couple of years ahead   [Via cellular-news]
