MWC’09 Microsoft Keynote Summary

Today, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Andy Lees, Senior VP of the Mobile Communications Business delivered the keynote highlighting the company’s latest innovations and partnerships, as well as share insights on the company’s strategies and approaches “that will enable more opportunities for mobile operators and device manufacturers to deliver exciting solutions for consumers and mobile workers”, according to Microsoft.

Below are the highlights.

Windows Mobile 6.5: While Microsoft is touting Windows Mobile will be rebranded to Windows Phone. I am still confused why the brand Windows Mobile is still been used here heavily. The interim version of Microsoft’s phone operating system, which will be release in the 2H2009. The Windows Mobile 6.5 release will feature a new, touch-enabled honeycomb user interface; new home screen; customizable widgets; and Internet Explorer 6.1,

image Microsoft My Phone: a free online service that can “sync text messages, photos, video, contacts….”  from the phone to the cloud. My Phone is currently in Beta. 

Windows Marketplace for Mobile: As Microsoft describes it, “a rich and integrated marketplace for searching, browsing and purchasing mobile applications from Windows® phones or from a PC by simply using a Windows Live ID.” The Marketplace will be available on Windows Mobile 6.5 phones.

Recite: A new voice note taking, searching that allows users to record short notes and recall them using voice search. Recite is now available in technical-preview test form.

Partnerships: Microsoft also have renewed partnership with Taiwanese HTC and a new partnership with the Korean LG .

Noteworthy: No Zune marketplace integration  nor release date of Windows Mobile 7 were mentioned
