Apple unveiled 3.0 firmware
As anticipated, Apple previewed today the next firmware 3.0 features and the SDK for developers, the 3.0 version includes around 100 new features including the ability to:
- Search your iPhone
- Cut, copy, and paste
- Send photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS*
- Read and compose email and text messages in landscape
Users will soon be able to copy/cut/paste text across application just by double taps on a word to present a cut, copy, paste popup. The version 3.0 will also provide support for MMS that let user send and receive files, like contact cards, audio files, location. A new Voice Memos app allows user to record voice memos.
iPhone OS 3.0 will add peer-to peer Bluetooth connectivity between iPhone devices as well as external peripherals such wireless BT headphones using A2DP stereo profile.
The API to access Google maps data will be available to app developers for location based related apps, however turn-by-turn navigation app can take advantage CoreLocation API but limited to own maps
API will allow 3rd-party servers can send text or sound notifications to Apple’s server, which then pushes it to a users iPhone instead to run background process to maximize battery life.
Other API additions including giving developers access to the iPhone’s proximity sensor, streaming video and audio via HTTP.
The SDK of OS 3.0 is available starting today, consumers will have to wait until summer 09 for the free upgrade to iPhone and at around $10 for iPod Touch.
