AT&T plans to upgrade its 3G network and to start 4G trial

iPhone users in the US will be glad to know that AT&T will upgrade its 3G network, with HSPA to support peak download speeds of 7.2Mbps as soon year end and completion expected in 2011. AT&T also plans to begin its 4G LTE trials in 2010, with deployment beginning in 2011.

The mobile broadband coverage will also be upgrade by doubling the wireless spectrum dedicated to 3G in most metropolitan areas. Capital investment for these projects fits within AT&T’s previously outlined expectation of total capital expenditures for 2009, targeted toward the US$17 billion to US$18 billion range.
