image Today at the presentation to investors and industry analysts, Jim Balsillie, RIM co CEO was happy to announce that the company’s BlackBerry Curve moved past the iPhone to become the best-selling consumer smartphone in the U.S. in the first quarter.

At the same meeting Jim Balsillie also disclosed, while his company remain loyal to its corporate and business customers, it will pursue its strong push  on the consumer market with next-generation version of its touchscreen BlackBerry Storm and many more touchscreen devices. Despite the rough start of its first touchscreen smartphone, the Blackberry Storm,  RIM still see the Storm as its springboard to jump to the consumer market well dominated by Apple.

"We see this very large and untapped consumer market," Jim Balsillie said during a presentation to analysts and investors, adding that more than half of RIM’s 25 million subscribers now fall into the non-corporate category.

BlackBerry coverage now extends to 475 wireless carriers and distribution partners in about 160 countries. The company grew its revenue in its last quarter by 84 percent to $3.46 billion.
