Google Apps Sync to Microsoft Outlook

image Corporate and SMB (Small Medium Business) users have been using traditionally Exchanges or Lotus Notes back-end infrastructure serving calendaring, email, contacts, etc. to the client software Microsoft outlook and Notes.

For large corporation, the back-end infrastructure is costly to maintain but it is is located safely within corporate glass house but smaller companies and workgroups using a cloud infrastructure offered by Google Apps are making more sense at this conjuncture.

Forcing the employees to use a Web-base PIM instead of the familiar Microsoft Outlook sometime could be difficult and counter-productive.

Google today announced a feature that allows Google Apps customers to sync their mail, calendar and contacts directly into Outlook, allowing the users to keep what they love most about Outlook without being tied to the costs of running an Exchange server. The service is avilable for Google Apps Premier or Education Editions.

Key features include:

  • Email, calendar, and contacts synchronization. For email, the plug-in uses the offline Gmail protocol, which is much faster than IMAP or other methods.
  • Free/Busy lookup and Global Address List functionality, which makes it easy to schedule meetings with your colleagues, regardless of whether they use Outlook’s calendar or Google Calendar.
  • A simple, two-click data migration tool which allows employees to easily copy existing data from Exchange or Outlook into Google Apps.

If Google can sync with Outlook, automatically ActiveSync will sync Outlook with your device. However you can not sync over the air.

how come OTA syncing is not possible? this is confusing me, if an exchange account can be synced with OTA just fine, then why would this be any different – same protocols right?
